Princess Katie Anne

“Then so be it. I, Davien, challenge Alpha Jarrett, the current Alpha of Black Fur Pack, to the Battle of Alphas.”
Pride coursed through me as I watched and heard my mate utter those words with undiluted confidence. I was proud of him because he stood strong even after discovering that his whole life had been a lie.
He stood strong.
But at the same time, I saw how he trembled due to weakness. He was exhausted from fighting Damien and emotionally drained. I would be, too, if I found out that the dad I knew wasn’t my father and had, in fact, killed my biological father before I was born.
I would be jaded, too, if I were in his shoes.
If I were being sincere, I was scared for him in that moment. I was worried sick as the audience roared, gossiping about the truth just revealed and Davien’s audacity to challenge Alpha Jarrett, even though he could barely stand without falling on his face.
Quickly, I shook off the shock zapping through me and put a seal on all other emotions. Then I walked toward the ground where Alpha Jarrett was standing with Davien. As soon as I arrived, I stood beside my mate, taking his hand in mine and offering him my body to support his stance.
Relief clouded his eyes when he saw me, but beyond that, there was grief, disbelief, and resentment. He was in pain-the kind that couldn’t be described with mere words. I squeezed his hand gently, assuring him that I was there for him.
However, Alpha Jarrett’s chuckle disrupted our moment, and he snarled, “You dare challenge me? Are you yearning for death, boy?”
I didn’t expect Davien to challenge him. Hell! No one thought Davien would actually take that bold step, but he did, and Alpha Jarrett hated that. He must have felt insulted, but there was no turning back now.
“Do accept the challenge, Alpha Jarrett,” I asked with a blunt voice, knowing this wasn’t the time or place to show my emotions.
Alpha Jarrett’s bloodshot eyes shifted to me. I could tell he wanted to curse me out, but he resisted, and his lips parted to respond. Before he could, Luna Cynthia ran up to him. She cried, “Please don’t, Jarrett. Please spare his life. He is simply angry. He is a child. My child, Jarrett.”
“Listen to me, Jarrett. Please,” Luna Cynthia begged.
Davien stepped forward, ready to begin the duel, but I blurted, “You can’t duel today.”
“Why not?” Alpha Jarrett, knowing what the outcome of the duel would be if Davien fought him in his current condition, barked that question.
There was no reason for the duel to be moved to another day, but to save Davien and buy him time to recover, I came up with a plan and said, “This is beyond Black Fur now, Alpha Jarrett. The duel with Damien was to choose the next Alpha, but this one will be to decide if you will remain Alpha. And if Davien wins, he will become Alpha, effective immediately.”
Alpha Jarrett’s brows furrowed as he didn’t understand me, so I added, voicing his worst nightmare, “That means my parents, the King and Queen of the realm, must be present for the duel, Alpha Jarrett, unless you are plotting rebellion.”
I didn’t miss how his gaze shifted to Cole as my words stunned him, but he was quick to pull himself together, spitting, “Fine! We will contact and wait for the King and Queen, but all of you had better stay far away from my home. I will not live under the same roof with the enemy.”
And by “all of you,” he meant Davien, me, and-surprisingly-Luna Cynthia as well.
With those words spoken, Alpha Jarrett stormed off. His loyal dogs followed him, and the crowd dispersed, leaving my mate and me with the woman who gave birth to him but couldn’t be trusted.
