Princess Katie Anne
~く)~
What kind of mate would I be if I didn’t notice my partner struggling even during training? Yes, he was improving, but the emotional turmoil he was trapped in was disturbing.
1 knew it. Still, I’d rather see him defeat his twin brother than watch him lose to Damien, because losing him to death would be unbearable for me, even though I was unmarked and our bond was considered fragile.
“The world would burn before that happens,” Zuri seethed within me, rage simmering as we watched Davien and Damien step into the large ring, poised to spar for the next Alpha of the Black Fur Pack.
Zoe remained silent, but I knew she’d tear apart anyone who dared to threaten Davien if he faltered.
Despite the rules that Gamma Benson announced before Damien and Davien entered the ring, I was prepared to intervene if necessary.
“I trust his skills and everything you’ve taught him,” Zuri, who had always been the kindest, murmured. “But his heart worries me. I see him letting his stupid brother win, just because he doesn’t want to kill him.”I shared that concern. I could see the same in him-i’d do the same if it were Kyle and me in that ring.
I whispered to my wolves, Nova and Jade, as they took my hands and squeezed them in silent support, while most of the crowd cheered Damien on.
I smiled at my friends, who had truly made Black Fur feel like home. But that smile faded when Cole, sitting close to Davien’s parents, approached me, leaning in to whisper,” You love him, don’t you?”
Rolling my eyes, l ignored him, my heart pounding, afraid my mate might make a reckless choice. Yet, this irritating face wouldn’t leave me alone.
“We can see it, Princess Katie,” Cole said softly, “but we also know you’ll have to abandon him if he loses-not just because he’d die, but because he’d be a disgrace to you.” His voice was calm, but his words stung.
His face twisted in a furrowed anger, but he knew better than to test me further. Smirking, he turned away, leaving me with my pounding heart and my stunned but silent friends. My gaze shifted from Davien to Alpha Jarrett when he rose to his feet to address his pack members and his two sons.
“With this in mind, I hope my sons will take this duel seriously and make death quick for whoever fails to prove their worthiness. This is the Battle of Alphas; stick to the rules and make me proud,” Alpha Jerrett concluded.
With that said, the duel began officially. But before Damien could make the first move, l opened my mind to Dolf, who linked me to Davien’s mind, and I said, “You better make me proud and win this duel, Davien, or else I will bring you back to life and kill you myself.”
My mate chuckled into my mind even though he was disturbed, “It’s a relief to know you still remember our plan, Katie Anne. Don’t get distracted, okay?””Don’t play around, Davien,” I warned him, recalling the plan we discussed before we slept last night. Even though I didn’t agree, Davien had decided to trust me with his life and that of his twin brother.
He said to me last night, “Whoever dies, I want you to use your mender ability to revive the person. If it’s me, I know you will bring me back to life, and if it’s Damien, I trust you will do the same.”
Of course, I told Davien that I had never done that before, and my mom, the only woman who had succeeded in mending a dead person, had trained hard to do that. Even when she did, my dad lay unconscious for months.
Despite disagreeing, Davien wouldn’t listen to me, and now I could only say these threatening words to him before he began to fight with his twin brother. “If you let him kill you, I will kill him, and even though I will give my life to mend you, I will watch him die, Davien. So you’d better win.”
