DAVIEN
~<>~
The Battle of Alphas.
I remembered the last one was between the late Alpha Tristan and his Beta, Louis, whom I spent days training with in Dark Moon Pack. If I were being honest, I didn’t expect my dad to bring this up.
Heck, I didn’t expect anyone to utter a word about the duel, especially since Dameien and I were brothers and neither of us had done anything to harm the pack. Damon shouldn’t have to fight to the death for the Alpha position with me, even though he had always been a douche.
And neither should I.
But the day had been set, and after many days of secretly training with Katie in a cave she found, I was ready for the duel, which would happen tomorrow evening. Yeah, physically, I was prepared to fight my brother, who had been training with Gamma Benson.
However, I couldn’t say I was mentally ready.
“How could anyone be?” Dolf grumbled within me as I walked through the dark but familiar corridors.
My wolf was tense with frustration. For him, this was supposed to be his second Battle of Alphas. Unfortunately, he hadn’t won the first because he had to stop Tristan from causing even more destruction to the pack and the realm.
“He’s your brother, for goddess’s sake! They know the rules of the duel, yet they’re deliberately pitting you against each other,” Dolf seethed into my mind.
This was nothing new-Dameien and I had always been turned against each other. That was an old story. What baffled me was that everyone, except Katie, seemed entirely comfortable with it. They’d all accepted the idea that Damien might kill me, and they were fine with that.
Deep down, I knew Damien lacked the strength to actually kill me. I’d been training tirelessly, and Dolf was always by my side. Still, the thought of having to take my twin brother’s life tomorrow haunted me. It wasn’t right. It never should be.
Her eyes went as wide as the ocean’s depths as she gasped with disbelief. “You won’t do that! He is your brother!” “One I will have to kill tomorrow anyway,” I retorted, holding my mom’s gaze.
I didn’t give her the chance to answer that question, mostly because I knew what her response would be. Instead, I asked her, “Am I even your son?”
I just had to ask. I have been trying to understand why she would want me dead, just so Damien could be Alpha. I couldn’t understand it, so I wanted to convince myself that I wasn’t a member of this family.
“You are, Davien, but you aren’t as strong as your brother, and you becoming Alpha would be a disgrace. This is how we can maintain the power we have and get more-”
I didn’t cut her off this time, but I also couldn’t listen to the hurtful words she had to say to me. To her, I was simply a means to an end. My life meant nothing because I was considered a weakling.
After standing before her for what seemed like forever, I muttered, with pain flowing out of me along with the words, “I won’t be dying tomorrow, Mom, and I promise you will regret these words.”
Then I walked away after noticing the fear in her eyes… I walked away because I could tell she was terrified for Damien, not for me, as she could see our fates changing rapidly.
