Princess Katie Anne
~<>~
My pounding heart swelled with pride as I noticed my mate’s improvement. His training with my brothers and other warriors in Dark Moon hasn’t been a waste. I also noticed that he had been holding back during the last few private duels we had before we traveled down to Black Fur.
But he wasn’t doing that now, and I was enjoying this duel more than whoever had put it together for whatever crazy reason. I was damn sure of that.
My mate was relentless, but so was I. Every time he thought he had an opening, I would slip out of his reach and attack before he could recover.
For the audience we now had, I yelled, “Seriously? You haven’t landed one punch, Future Alpha. I know I would be your Luna and always support you in times of crisis, but man up, baby!”
Davien gritted his teeth, showing anger, a bruised ego, and frustration to the pack members even though the energy flowing through our bond was calm and affectionate. He was such a drama king, and I loved him.
I thought I would let him deliver at least three blows, and this seemed like the perfect moment. But what I didn’t know was that even Davien knew that—and I didn’t have to let him to successfully throw a heavy punch to my shoulder.
Davien tried to land another, but despite the pain bursting through my right shoulder, I retaliated with a swift kick to his gut after blocking my shoulder with my forearm for defense. My mate bent over for less than a second and charged at me again.
I ducked and said, “I must give it to you. You are better than I thought, and I am sure most of these people can agree. However, being better isn’t enough to win this duel, Davien.”
The grin on my face was wiped off when Davien retorted, “Better might not be good enough until I prove that I am better than you, My Princess.”
The crowd responded on my behalf, yelling at Davien and telling him not to be overconfident. But he had supporters who cheered him on. That showed our plan was working, and in that moment, I thought of Cole and Alpha Jarrett.
They were standing at the back, observing every move Davien made.
Before they could catch me staring at them, I looked away but quickly informed my mate through our secret but effective link, “It’s your dad and Cole. This might be about you after all because they have their eyes on you.”
“Ouch, you broke my spine,” I cried into the mindlink despite the grimace I presented to the rest of the world.
“You are evil,” Davien retorted as he struggled to get back on his feet.
I moved closer to offer him my hand, but even though our eyes locked, he ignored it and announced to the crowd and Gamma Benson, “I am finished. She wins.”
Clearly, my mate was ending the duel to avoid hurting me. I could kiss him right there, but to keep the plan in motion, I decided to do more when we returned to our room. However, that intention was shoved aside when someone screamed words that made Davien and me understand why this duel had to happen.
“Seriously? He gave up?” the person started, quickly gaining acceptance. “He’s meant to be our Alpha, but he can’t even defeat a girl from another pack? His mate, for goddess’ sake! He can’t be our next Alpha! We want Damien instead.”
Then someone else cried out, “Let them duel for the position. The winner becomes the next Alpha.”
More people joined in, yelling their opinions, and somehow, I knew this was what Cole and Alpha Jarrett wanted. If only they knew what the outcome of the duel would be, they would have prevented it instead of scheduling it for a day before the allies’ meeting that Davien told me about.
If only they knew…
