In that moment, the sunlight became a moving spotlight, closely tracking its leading lady.

Inside the damp, dark house, Mina was dragged into a windowless room.
Her warm down jacket was torn to shreds, white feathers swirling in the air.
Her mouth was taped shut. She stared blankly at the dancing feathers as more and more of her clothes were ripped away. The moment the hem of her shirt was lifted, she gave up.
Her only solace was that she wasn't a true daughter of the Blackthorne family.
That way, even if she died here, she wouldn't drag their name through the mud.

Mina closed her eyes and bit down on her tongue.
Crash!
A deafening boom echoed through the room.
Something heavy collapsed, and sunlight poured in.
Bang!
Another loud crack rang out, and searing hot blood splattered across her face.
Mina slowly opened her eyes. A white feather landed on the tip of her nose, and a second later, she heard the voice of her salvation.
"Mina, don't be afraid."

Bang—bang—bang—
Gunshots rang out in rapid succession across the shantytown, each one closer and more intense than the last.
Isolde stood frozen, staring in disbelief toward the concrete building.
For a split second, she felt as if a bullet had flown out of that iron door and pierced right between her eyes.
"Huh? You weren't the one shooting?"
Isolde stiffened, her face draining of color as she turned around.
Preston had silently slipped into the dark alley. He was already a monster, but blending into the shadows made him look even more dangerous. Even his smile sent shivers down her spine.
Isolde took a defensive step back, completely overwhelmed by the situation.
Preston glanced toward the source of the gunfire, looking mildly intrigued. "Did you give the gun to someone else?"
