The midday sun slanted downwards, but the dark alley that was usually exposed to the light was once again swallowed by heavy shadows.
Isolde leaned against a low, moss-covered wall, her expression cold as she stared down the deep alley she had walked countless times.
Dark, damp, claustrophobic, and breeding with crime. Even when the sun occasionally graced it, it couldn't change its fundamentally rotting nature.
"Isolde!"
Isolde looked up. Mina stood at the entrance to the alley, panting heavily as she ran toward her.
"I finally found you. I... I have something to tell you."
Isolde cast a calm glance back at the alley entrance. "Whatever it is, tell me when we get inside."
Mina nodded without overthinking it, finally taking a good look at her surroundings.
She had never seen such a dilapidated place. Her expression grew complicated. "You... you've always lived here?"
"Yeah," Isolde said. "Is it too dirty for you?"
"No." Mina quickly waved her hands. "That's not what I meant. Where is your house? I'd love to see it."
Isolde pointed toward a turn in the dark alley. "Take a left at that fork. It's the third low building down."
Mina nodded, slinging off her backpack and handing it to Isolde. "Um, I don't know how to explain this to you, but what happened earlier was my fault. I shouldn't show up empty-handed for my first visit. Take this."
Isolde glanced at her own backpack, and Mina immediately retracted hers.
"It's fine. You can give it to me when we get inside."
Isolde nodded. "Let's go."
The two walked side by side into the depths of the alley.
Isolde had walked this path countless times.
When she was little, she had been terrified and would always wait for Mira to walk with her. Later, when their schedules stopped aligning, she slowly learned to adapt on her own. But no matter how much she adapted, she could never look straight at the fear this place had ingrained in her.
If running away was useless, then she would sever it completely!
That was why she wouldn't choose Preston's path. From now on, she would never walk the path someone else laid out for her. She would fight for her own life!
"Is this it?"
They stood in front of a blackened concrete building with a heavily rusted iron door.
