Jason’s attention settled on me first, and he gave me the same polite smile he had given me

earlier.

“Faye, how are you enjoying your stay so far?” he asked.

I smiled. “It’s been good. Sage has been taking very good care of me. She’s barely given me a chance to complain about anything.”

Sage laughed. “That’s because I know you too well.”

I smiled at her before looking back at Jason. He nodded, but something about the exchange between him and Sage immediately caught my attention.

The moment Jason arrived, the atmosphere between the two of them was tense. It wasn’t obvious enough for someone who didn’t know them to notice, but I knew Sage. I had spent my entire life with her. I also knew Jason well enough to recognize when something was wrong between them.

Neither of them seemed particularly comfortable around the other. There was an awkward silence after Jason’s question, and I suddenly felt like I was standing in the middle of something I wasn’t supposed to witness.

I cleared my throat lightly. “Well, I think I’ll head inside. I’m actually getting a little tired.”

I started to turn away, but before I could take more than a step, Sage caught my arm.

“Wait.”

I looked back at her.

“You don’t have to go yet,” Sage said. “I thought you wanted to stay out a little longer.”

“I did. But I also need to rest,” I said.

Sage smirked. “Okay, then. Wait for me. We’ll go inside together.”

I glanced at Jason. He looked uncomfortable. Not mildly uncomfortable, either. He had the expression of someone who already knew exactly what was coming and was quietly hoping it wouldn’t happen.

I looked back at Sage. “Are you sure?”

Sage smiled. “Of course.”

Jason exhaled quietly, and I pretended not to notice.

Sage turned her attention toward him. “Besides, Jason will probably still go back to wherever he was coming from.”

Her tone was casual, but there was something underneath her words that made me pay attention.

“So there’s no reason for him to cut our time together short. That would be unfair, wouldn’t it? He has his own company whenever he wants it, and I’m currently spending time with my sister.”

I looked between them. There it was again. That strange tension.

Sage was smiling, but I could hear the seriousness underneath her words. Jason clearly heard it too. His eyes moved toward her, and for a moment, he looked like he wanted to tell her to stop.

Jason finally looked at me. “Sage is being unnecessarily dramatic.”

Sage’s smile widened. “I’m not.”

“You are,” he said to her.

He looked at me again, then back at Sage. “You’re stressing her out for no reason. You should let Faye go inside and rest. You and I need to talk, so don’t make her wait.”

Sage’s expression remained calm. “If you really want to talk, you can go and talk to your other companion.”

Jason’s jaw tightened.

“I’m currently unavailable,” Sage added.

She tilted her head slightly. “Isn’t that what a backup is for?”

The words were delivered so casually that, for a moment, I wasn’t sure I had heard her correctly. Then I saw Jason’s expression, and I knew he definitely had.

I stared at the two of them. What exactly was going on? I realized I didn’t even want to know. Whatever their problem was, I wanted absolutely no part in it.
