moment I entered Silver Hollow.

And now, the strange tension between Jason and Sage was all adding up to something I didn’t

understand.

I knew both of them well enough to know that I needed to be vigilant during my stay. I had come home expecting nothing more than a visit with my family. I didn’t want surprises, especially not the kind that involved problems inside the pack.

I remained still and listened. For a few seconds, neither of them spoke. Then Jason’s voice

reached me.

“What were you and Faye talking about?”

I frowned. Sage immediately responded.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me. I asked what you and Faye were talking about.”

There was irritation in Jason’s voice now.

Sage gave a short laugh. “Why are you asking me what my sister and I were talking about? It’s none of your business. Why do you care?”

“Because…” Jason started.

“Because what?” Sage’s voice remained controlled, but I could hear the edge in it. “She’s my sister, Jason. Why can’t we spend time together and talk about random stuff?”

“I didn’t say you couldn’t.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“I don’t have a problem with you two talking.”

“Then don’t question me about a conversation I had with my own sister,” Sage said.

The way she kept emphasizing the part about me being her sister was starting to sound like something that was meant to be funny.

I leaned slightly closer to the corner. I wasn’t trying to hear everything. I just wanted to have an

idea.

Sage continued. “If you have something you want to say to me, then say it and get it over with inte sure your lover is waiting for you. You should probably get back to her.”

Jason’s voice hardened. “Shut up, Sage.”

I froze.

“Don’t talk nonsense right now,” he added.

Sage laughed. “Why? Are you afraid Faye might hear us?”

Jason didn’t answer.

Sage continued. “Is that it? Don’t you want your precious ex to find out that you’ve moved on from

her sister too?”

My stomach tightened. I remained completely still. I wasn’t sure what she meant by “moved on from her sister.” I didn’t want to assume.

But Sage wasn’t finished.

“And apparently, your standards have dropped too,” Sage added.

There was another pause.

“Sleeping with a servant now?”

My eyes widened. I stared at the wall in front of me.

A servant?

I suddenly remembered the woman beside Jason earlier. That Alice.

Sage and Jason were not simply having a disagreement. There was another woman involved, and Sage knew.

Jason spoke again. “I don’t have time for the noise you’re making.”

His voice was low and controlled. “I’m telling you something important.”

Sage didn’t respond.

“Like I said. Don’t tell her anything about the crisis.”

My heart skipped.

Crisis?

I straightened.

So there really was something wrong.

Jason continued. “If you don’t want to have a serious problem with me, you won’t say anything to

her.”

I stared ahead. The whole situation suddenly made sense.

Sage laughed softly. “Relax. Faye isn’t dumb.”

Jason said nothing.

“Nobody needs to tell her there’s a problem. She’ll figure it out herself.”

I closed my eyes briefly. She was right. I had already noticed. I just didn’t know what it was really

about.

Sage continued. “Did you really think she wouldn’t notice the heavy security?”

My eyes moved toward the window beside me.

“She passed several checkpoints just to get here. And then she gets to the training ground and sees half the pack training like we’re preparing for a war.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

Sage wasn’t finished.

“Even the civilians are being trained now.”

She paused.

“Children too.”

I took a deep breath.

“And some of the elders are barely strong enough to stand for long periods, yet they’re being pushed into training as well.”

Sage continued. “Do you honestly think she won’t put all of that together?”

Jason’s silence answered her.
