Chapter 624-1

ALEXANDER

I watched Faye for a moment after she finished speaking.

She looked exhausted. Not just tired from the day, but genuinely worn down. For the first time since I had come home, I could see that her distance hadn’t been because she didn’t care about what I was feeling. She had simply been overwhelmed by everything else.

I let out a slow breath.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I didn’t know.”

Her eyes lifted to mine.

“If it means anything… I felt terrible for not telling you immediately,” she admitted. “I knew I should have told you. I just didn’t know what to do with the promise I made to your mother.”

I nodded slowly.

I understood that now. It didn’t erase the fact that she had kept something important from me, but at least I understood that she had been struggling too.

I looked at her for another moment.

“So does that mean it won’t happen again?” I asked.

She frowned slightly.

I continued, “… that you won’t keep things from me anymore?”

“Yes,” Faye said immediately. But she seemed to think about her answer for another second.

“No,” she said.

I stared at her. “What?” I asked, a little confused.

She blinked.

“I mean…” She paused. “No, I can’t promise that.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Really?”

There was genuine disbelief in my voice this time because I couldn’t believe she was boldly saying that to me right now.

Faye’s expression tightened.

“I’m sorry. It’s complicated.”

I looked at her for a moment, trying to understand how she had managed to contradict herself within the space of a few seconds.

She must have noticed the look on my face because she quickly added, “Look, let me explain.”

I said nothing.

She shifted slightly on the bed before continuing.

Claim

“I don’t want to hide things from you. I really don’t. If something happens to me, or if I know something that concerns you, I don’t want to keep it from you on purpose.”

I listened to her try to make it make sense.

Faye continued, “But if your mother asks me to give her the chance to tell you something herself, then I can’t promise that I’ll ignore her request just because you’re my mate. That’s her right too.”

I looked back at her.

“So you’re telling me there are circumstances where you would still keep something from

me.”

Her mouth opened, then closed again.

“That’s not exactly what I’m saying,” she said.

“It sounds like exactly what you’re saying.”

She sighed.

“I’m saying I wouldn’t deliberately hide something from you. But if someone important tells me something in confidence and asks me to let them tell you themselves, then I don’t think it’s fair for me to betray that confidence. Right?”

I stared at her.

I looked away for a moment. I didn’t like the answer, but I couldn’t pretend I didn’t understand

And frustratingly, I couldn’t completely disagree with her.

I shook my head and pushed myself to my feet.

“I can’t believe you.”

Faye immediately shot to her feet.

And before I could say anything else, she stepped forward and wrapped her arms tightly around me.

“I’m sorry,” she said, pressing her head against my chest. “Please.”
