Chapter 623
ALEXANDER
I managed to get through most of the work I had brought back from the office. I was still in bed, thinking about a few things, when the bedroom door opened.
Faye walked in carrying a cup of tea.
She didn’t say anything as she approached the bed until she was standing right in front of
“Here’s your medicine,” she said.
She placed the cup on the bedside table on my side before turning away.
“Thank you.”
I reached for the cup and took a sip while she moved toward the other side of the room. For a moment, I thought she was getting ready for bed.
Then she picked up a pillow.
I lowered the cup slightly.
She walked to the bed and pulled the duvet from the foot of it before turning toward the door.
“Good night.”
I stared at her as I realised what she was doing.
“Faye, wait.”
She stopped. For a moment, she remained with her back to me before slowly turning around.
“Where are you going?” I asked.
She took a slow breath, as though she needed a moment to steady herself before answering.
“I’m tired, Alexander. I’m going to sleep.”
I frowned.
“To sleep where?”
She glanced at the pillow in her arms before looking back at me.

“I thought you might want some space.”
Something about the way she said it irritated me immediately.
“Space?”

She continued, “You can have the room. I’m going to sleep in Irene’s room since she’s not
here.”
I stared at her. I honestly didn’t know where she had gotten that idea. I set the cup aside properly before getting out of bed.
“I never said I wanted space,” I started.
Faye watched me without saying anything. It was almost as if she was waiting for me to finish so she could walk out of the room.
“I never said I wanted the bed to myself either,” I continued. “And I certainly never said I wanted you to stop caring about my existence altogether.”
For a moment, she seemed confused by what I was saying. Did she really think I was pushing her away?
“What are you even talking about?” Faye asked.
That was enough to push the irritation I had been holding back to the surface.
I snapped, “All I wanted was for you to admit that you were wrong.”
Her expression changed slightly.
“I wanted you to understand that you hurt me by keeping something like that from me,” I said.
I took a breath, trying to keep my voice under control.
“Anyone could lie to me. Anyone could keep a secret from me… Anyone at all.
I looked directly at her.
“But not you, Faye.”
Faye stood completely still.
“I trusted you,” I said. “I liked knowing that I could trust you with anything. I liked knowing that no matter what happened, you wouldn’t be someone I had to question.”

“And you broke that trust.”
She didn’t respond. She simply stood there, watching me.

FAYE
I stared at Alexander in pure surprise and confusion. I had never seen him like this before. I wasn’t used to him actually owning his feelings, especially not to the point of admitting that
he was hurt.
I had spent the entire day thinking he was simply trying to punish me and make me feel guilty for what I had done, but looking at him now, I realised that wasn’t what this was. He was genuinely hurt.
“I’m sorry,” I said quietly. “I didn’t know that’s how felt.”
He didn’t respond, so I continued.

“I knew you were angry. I knew you were upset with me, but I didn’t realise you felt like I had broken your trust… I did, but I didn’t know how much it meant to you.”
I lowered my eyes for a moment before taking a slow breath, trying to pull myself together.
“I was just tired, Alexander. I’ve been exhausted from everything too. Finding out that Helen is dying because of me… Because Helen saved my life.”
I shook my head as I looked down at the pillow and duvet in my hands.
“That’s not the worst part. The worst part was that she saved me, and now she’s dying
because of what she did for me, and I can’t even do anything to help her in return. I can’t fix it.
I can’t take it away from her. I can’t even give her back what she gave me.”
I let out a dry laugh before sitting down on the edge of the bed.
I didn’t say anything for a minute.
Then I finally spoke. “Earlier today, when I went for my run, I saw a deer. It was dying. I don’t even know what happened to it. I just found it there, and for some reason, when I saw it, I thought… I thought about my gift.”
I stared down at my hands.
