FAYE

A few moments later, Ambrose returned with his wife and daughter. His wife stepped into the room first, and the little girl stayed close to her side.

“Good afternoon, Luna,” she greeted respectfully.

“Good afternoon,” I replied with a small smile.

I looked at the three of them briefly before turning my attention elsewhere.

“Martha.”

Martha immediately appeared.

“Please prepare one of the empty guest rooms for them,” I said.

“Yes, Luna.”

Martha bowed and left the room.

Then I turned back to Ambrose. “Martha will show you to the room once it’s ready. You can freshen up and get some rest while you wait for Alpha Alexander to return.”

Ambrose nodded.

“Thank you, Luna.”

His wife nodded as well. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. And if you need anything, just let Martha know.” I gave them a small smile before excusing myself.

Once I left the sitting room, I realized I had completely lost whatever little appetite I had before Ambrose arrived.

It wasn’t much to begin with. I had only been wanting to make myself eat because I knew I should, but after getting up and dealing with everything, the thought of going back to my untouched lunch wasn’t appealing anymore.

There was no point sitting in front of a plate and pretending I suddenly found it interesting. Instead, I headed toward the office to keep myself busy.

I wasn’t looking for anything in particular. I simply wanted something to occupy my time,

preferably something that required enough of my attention to keep my mind from wandering. And the office seemed like the best place to start.

I walked inside and went straight to the shelves, scanning the rows of books. Alexander had added some books to his collection lately. There were far more books in here now than I would ever bother to count, and most of them still looked like the sort of books that would put me to sleep within five minutes.

I smiled to myself. Maybe that wasn’t such a bad thing either.

I moved along the shelves, running my fingers lightly over the spines as I searched for something that looked interesting enough to hold my attention.

After a moment, I pulled out one of the books and glanced at the cover.

It seemed promising. I opened it and flipped through a few pages before deciding to take it with me. I settled into one of the chairs in the lounge and began going through it.

The book was a historical account of some of the oldest packs in the region, covering their early alliances, territorial disputes, and the agreements that had shaped the relationships between them over the years. It wasn’t exactly the kind of book I would have picked up on my own, but it was interesting enough.

What I had expected to be a few quiet minutes turned into much longer than I realized. Before long, I was completely absorbed in the book.

I didn’t know how much time had passed until I heard the familiar sound of a car approaching the house.

I paused and looked up from the page. Then I closed the book halfway and listened as the sound of the engine faded outside.

He was back.

I wasn’t in any particular hurry to see him, so I remained where I was for a few more minutes, finishing the page I was on. By the time another ten minutes had passed, I finally placed a bookmark between the pages and closed the book.

I left it on the couch and made my way to our chambers.

I closed the door behind me and walked into the bedroom. I was already listening for the familiar sounds I had grown accustomed to hearing whenever I returned home… The familiar sound of the door opening and Faye’s footsteps approaching.

Usually, I didn’t have to wait long before she appeared.

I removed my jacket and placed it over the back of a chair before reaching for the buttons of my shirt. I listened again.

Nothing.

I changed out of my clothes and pulled on something more comfortable, still expecting to hear the bedroom door open at any moment, but it never did.
