Chapter 621
FAYE

I opened the bedroom door and saw that Alexander was just standing there. He looked toward me as I entered but didn’t say anything.
I walked over to the bed and sat down, facing him.
“Welcome back,” I said.
He nodded. “Thank you.”
His response was just as simple. I didn’t ask how his day had gone. I didn’t ask how the meeting went, and I didn’t ask how he was feeling. Because I still wasn’t sure what mood he was in, and I didn’t want to assume that he was ready to talk to me properly.
He didn’t seem to know what mood I was in either. After a brief silence, he turned away from me and picked up his suit.
I watched him walk toward the closet without saying anything.
“Ambrose is here with his family,” I said.
Alexander stepped into the closet with his suit, leaving me sitting on the bed. I waited quietly, listening to the faint sounds coming from inside.
A few moments later, he returned to the bedroom.
He asked casually, “What does he want?”
I explained why Ambrose had come and told him about his concerns for his family’s safety. I also explained that I hadn’t wanted to send them away, so I had asked Martha to prepare one of the guest rooms for them to stay in until he returned.
Alexander was quiet for a moment, seemingly processing everything I had told him.
“Alright.” He didn’t say anything more.
He walked out of the bedroom and into the sitting room.
I remained on the bed for a moment, staring after him. I had expected him to say something else.
He didn’t.
It was already getting late, and I still needed to know what he wanted to do about Ambrose and his family. If they were going to stay through the night, I would need to make arrangements for their dinner.
I got up and followed him into the sitting room.
“What do you want to do about them?” I asked.
Alexander looked at me.

“You said you sorted them out, didn’t you?” he asked.
“Yes, but I need to know if they’re staying. If they are, I’ll need to make arrangements for their dinner.”
He seemed to consider it briefly before answering.
“Go ahead and do what you need to. I’ll see Ambrose in the morning.”
I nodded.
“I’ll be in the office,” Alexander said.
He turned and left the room.
A knock sounded on the door almost immediately after Alexander left. I already knew who it was.
“Come in,” I said.
Martha stepped into the room and stopped a short distance from me.
I looked at her.
“Yes, Martha?”
She gave me a small nod.
“Luna, I wanted to ask if you would like to make any changes to the menu for dinner.”
I understood immediately what she meant. Martha had simply found a polite way of asking whether Ambrose and his family would be staying for dinner without actually asking me.

“Go ahead with the usual menu,” I told her. “The guests will be staying for dinner as well, so let the cook know to prepare enough for them.”
“Yes, Luna.”
Martha nodded and left the room.
ALEXANDER
I was already in the office when I decided to call my mother. She answered after a few rings.
“Alexander?”
“Hi, Mom.”
There was a brief silence before she laughed softly. “I almost thought I was hallucinating when I saw your name on my phone.”
I frowned.
“Since when do you call me two days in a row?” she asked, sounding amused.
I didn’t find it funny. “I just got back from a meeting, and I wanted to check on you. How are you feeling?”

Her voice became quieter: “I’m still the same.”
“Are the symptoms getting worse?” I asked.
“No,” she replied.

sighed. “Mom, please tell me exactly what’s happening to you. I need to know, so I know where to start.”
She didn’t answer immediately. I waited as the silence stretched between us.
