Musicals? Jack wouldn't be caught dead at one, even if you paid him. The same goes for movies and plays; he just isn't interested. He'd rather spend his time making money than wasting it on entertainment. But for Eleanor, Jack was willing to make an exception.
On the phone, Eleanor slowed her hair-drying as she listened to Jack's proposal. After a thoughtful pause, she finally said, "Okay." She wasn't sure what she'd been thinking about during the silence, but she couldn't bear the thought of turning him down.
In his car, Jack couldn't hide his grin when Eleanor didn't reject him. Trying to play it cool, he said, "I'll pick you up tomorrow."
"Sure."
"Get some rest."
"Will do."
With that, they hung up. In her bedroom, Eleanor looked at her phone and exhaled slowly. There was a new vibe, a hint of something more between them, even though they hadn't said much. Sitting on her bed, she thought about the call for a moment before continuing to dry her hair.
Jack, in his car, tossed his phone into the compartment beside him, a huge smile on his face. He tapped rhythmically on the steering wheel, even humming a tune. Eleanor’s acceptance made everything feel sweeter. He hummed all the way back to the family home.
"Mom!" he called out loudly as he walked in.
Carrie, coming down the stairs, eyed him suspiciously. For the past couple of years, Jack had been gloomy, weighed down by his thoughts. His usual calls to her were half-hearted, as if he dreaded she'd ask him for money. But today, he seemed different.
"Found some money?" Carrie asked, eyeing him closely.
Jack chuckled, "Money? Please."
Was he the type to get excited over money?
Seeing Jack in a good mood, Carrie teased, "You've been avoiding serious talks for years. No plans for marriage and kids? Want your dad and me to die disappointed?"
"Or is there some good news you're hiding?"
"Nothing, Mom. I'm heading to my room."
The thing with Eleanor wasn’t set in stone yet, and Jack didn't want to jinx it. Last time, he was too obvious and it didn’t end well. Carrie tried to get more out of him, but Jack cut her off, "Mom, don't worry. I've got it under control."
He didn't wait for her to respond and went upstairs. He had always preferred handling his own affairs, and this time, he was putting in real effort with Eleanor.
"Every time we get to serious matters, you run off. You think I enjoy nagging? Your dad and I can't be here forever, you know," Carrie muttered as she watched him go.
Back in his room, Jack was beaming at the thought of Eleanor agreeing to see the musical with him. His mom was right; he had been down for the past two years, making everyone cautious around him. But tonight, Jack felt like a new man.
After a shower, he was still humming, his mood through the roof. He could almost see a bright future with Eleanor. Sitting on his bed, drying his hair, he picked up his phone, tempted to call her again. But he remembered they had already spoken and she had agreed, so he put the phone down. He didn't want to seem too eager and scare her off.
