Rather than bothering anyone else, it was better to bother him.
After hopping into the car and buckling up, Taylor turned to Leonora and asked, "Why are you working so late?"
"I took a few days off earlier, so I've been catching up these past few days."
After Leonora finished, Taylor didn't keep the conversation going.
The entire ride was quiet, and Taylor didn't try to cheer Leonora up like he used to.
Having not seen each other for a while, Leonora felt uneasy around Taylor, always sensing a bit of distance.
Remembering her recent downer of a hospital visit, Leonora went even quieter.
Soon enough, they reached the bottom of Leonora's apartment building.
Leonora unbuckled her seatbelt, thanked Taylor, and got out.
Even though Taylor didn't say anything, he still got out to see her off.
It wasn't until her figure disappeared around the stairwell corner that Taylor turned back and got into the car.
Having been with Leonora for over two years, dropping her off felt like returning home, familiar with every little detail of the neighborhood.
Over those two years, whatever the initial reason for being with her, Leonora had become a part of his life, a habit.
He hadn’t been doing well during their time apart.
Sitting in the car for a while, Taylor looked up at the apartment once more before starting the car and driving off.
Upstairs.
Leonora had just unlocked her door when she saw her mom, Karen, coming out of the bedroom with a phone in her hand, looking upset.
Her dad wasn't home.
Seeing this, Leonora, placing her bag on the cabinet near the entrance, asked, "Mom, what's wrong? Why isn't Dad back yet?"
Hearing Leonora's voice, Karen realized she was home.
Distractedly looking at Leonora, Karen said, "It's nothing, nothing at all."
"Mom, you wear your worries on your face."
Hearing this, Karen looked at Leonora for a long moment before saying, "It's about your dad and your uncle."
"Your uncle was driving and hit someone. The couple is nearly in their seventies, and your dad was in the passenger seat. They're both at the police station giving their statements now."
"How serious is it?" Leonora tensed up immediately upon hearing this.
"They're still in the hospital, and it's unclear how they're doing. I heard the couple's son and grandson are rather... tough to deal with."
Karen's concern made Leonora guess what was happening, assuming the other party was not easy to talk to.
Walking over, Leonora put an arm around Karen's shoulder, comforting her, "Mom, don't worry too much. We'll see what the police report says, and we'll take responsibility for what we need to."
Although she was comforting Karen, Leonora was actually quite scared and nervous.
Growing up, apart from her entanglements with Taylor, this was the most serious incident she had faced.
That night, Leonora couldn't sleep, tossing and turning in bed, waiting for her dad to come home until it was nearly dawn.
