Leonora was finishing up her report when Taylor's voice came through, "Leonora, did you miss me?"
At his question, Leonora's shoulders slumped slightly, her face showing a mix of resignation and mild annoyance.
"Taylor, you’ve only been gone a day," she replied, trying to keep her tone even.
Honestly, she didn't miss him. If anything, she relished the rare peace and quiet away from his constant presence.
On the other end, Taylor chuckled, "Well, I missed you, especially after work, not being able to pick you up, not seeing you."
His words hung in the air, met by Leonora's silence.
"Leonora, I’m not used to this," he confessed. "Not used to you not being by my side."
There was a sincerity in his voice that made it hard for Leonora to dismiss his feelings.
After a pause, she softened, "You'll be back in a few days."
She didn't mention her meeting with Grant that day or what Ellory had told her. There was no point in stirring the pot.
Taylor laughed at her attempt to console him and pushed further, "Leonora, do you miss me too?"
Her reply was perfunctory, "Yeah, sure."
"I'm hanging up now, I'll video call you."
Before she could respond, the call ended, and moments later, her phone buzzed with an incoming video call on Messenger.
She answered, seeing Taylor's face light up with a smile.
Sitting cross-legged on her bed, she watched as Taylor changed his clothes while chatting with her. "Taylor, you’re a bit clingy," she teased.
"I’ve only been gone a day, and you’re already asking if I miss you and wanting to video call. Even I don't do that," she added with a chuckle.
Taylor, now dressed, sat at his desk, "Who else gets this privilege, to have me so attached?"
Leonora didn't rise to the bait, knowing his smooth talk could charm anyone.
Seeing her looking so sweet and demure on the phone screen, Taylor couldn't bring himself to end the call, continuing their conversation.
At one point, Leonora's mother called from the living room, asking who she was talking to. Leonora quickly said she was video chatting with her friend Joselyn.
Their conversation meandered on until Leonora, worn out, fell asleep on her bed. Taylor didn't hang up; instead, he watched her while working.
He felt a sense of relief seeing her safe at home.
But he couldn't shake the jealousy from Blake's report earlier, mentioning Leonora's lunch with Grant. Watching her sleep, he mused that she still wasn't being honest with him. He had given her ample opportunity to mention it, yet she hadn’t.
It seemed he'd have to address it when he got back.
Taylor worried, wondering if she knew the reason behind Grant's sudden departure years ago. Her silence felt like a strategy, or maybe she thought it unnecessary to discuss, or she didn't want to worry him while he was away.
He hoped it was the latter two, that she was protecting him from unnecessary stress.
Lost in these thoughts, Taylor watched Leonora for a long while before getting back to his work.
In the following days, Grant didn't contact Leonora. Unlike Taylor's assertiveness, Grant respected her space, not wanting to make things uncomfortable for her.
Taylor, on the other hand, kept in regular contact with Leonora, their relationship progressing as though they were officially dating. Leonora had grown accustomed to this new, attentive Taylor, whether he was in Ravenwood or away.
