Grant pulled out a chair for Leonora, and she took her seat at the dining table.
This time, Leonora didn't bother with the formal "Mr. Taylor," which was a relief to Grant. He settled into the chair across from her.
They were in a cozy little private room. Facing Grant, Leonora suddenly found herself at a loss for words.
She could have asked him why he left without a word. She could have lashed out at him, told him how awful she felt after he vanished, how she nearly spiraled into depression.
But now, it all seemed pointless.
Her time with Grant, their past romance—it all felt like a lifetime ago.
Besides, she wasn't exactly single. She was seeing someone, Taylor, even if it wasn't official.
Leonora stayed silent as the server brought their food.
Once the server left, Grant began serving her: “These are all your favorites, Arielle.”
Leonora's first thought was how Taylor would react if he knew she was having dinner with Grant. He'd probably lose it.
“Thank you,” she said, snapping out of her thoughts and politely thanking Grant.
Her politeness made Grant's expression falter.
After two years, the gap between them had grown; she wasn't as relaxed around him as she was with Taylor.
Grant looked at Leonora sadly for a moment before saying, “Arielle, I'm so sorry for disappearing on you back then. And for hiding my true identity.”
“Arielle, I didn’t mean to deceive you. I was just scared you'd reject me.”
The main reason Grant wanted to meet Leonora today was to apologize for these things.
Holding her utensils, Leonora looked up at Grant and said, “It’s all in the past. Don’t worry about it.”
Leonora’s nonchalant response made Grant feel even more dejected.
It meant she had moved on from their past, and from him.
As he watched Leonora quietly eat her rice, Grant added more food to her plate: “Arielle, have some more.”
“Okay,” Leonora nodded quickly.
Meeting again, Grant was no longer her boyfriend, just her boss.
Leonora's reserved and distant manner made Grant’s heart ache.
If he had a choice, he wished he had been healthier, so he wouldn't have had to leave her suddenly or hide so much from her.
Seeing Grant’s sad eyes, Leonora reminded him, “Grant, you should eat too.”
Grant had invited her to dinner, so Leonora focused on eating properly.
But her simple use of "Grant" instantly lifted his spirits, and he hurriedly began to eat, though his gaze often returned to her.
As they were nearly finished with their meal, Grant suddenly asked, “Arielle, do you like Taylor?”
He had seen how naturally she was with Taylor, more at ease than she had ever been with him.
So, he wanted to know if she liked Taylor.
If she did, he would step back and stop pursuing her.
Leonora paused, not sure how to respond.
After thinking for a moment, she looked up and said, “I’ll handle my own affairs.”
Grant understood she knew what he was implying, but if he interfered, he'd only complicate things.
