Bryce, seeing what was happening, quickly called a maid to watch Bryan and then dashed off to the bathroom.
Jesse was hunched over the toilet, retching, while Bryce knelt beside her, gently rubbing her back. "Jesse, why are you throwing up so badly? Let's go to the hospital and get you checked out," he said, worry evident in his voice.
After saying that, he fetched her a glass of warm water.
Taking the water from Bryce, Jesse rinsed her mouth and shook her head. "Maybe I just ate something bad. I'll be fine after a rest."
With his hand still on Jesse's back, Bryce insisted, "Don't wait to feel better. Let's go now."
Jesse firmly replied, "No need. I just can't stand the smell of greasy food right now. You go have dinner with Bryan; that'll be enough for me."
Jesse had always detested hospitals, the smell of disinfectant, and particularly disliked seeking medical care for herself.
But Bryce was determined, coaxing her, "You can't just suffer through this! Honey, please!"
As Bryce was comforting Jesse in the bathroom, the maid, holding Isaac, came in and saw Jesse's condition. She casually remarked, "Ms. Estrella, could you be pregnant again? You seem to have the symptoms."
Her offhand comment left both Jesse and Bryce stunned.
Pregnant again?
That couldn't be possible! They had been careful, except for that one time they ran out of protection, but that was during her safe period!
After the initial shock, Jesse turned to Bryce with a look that demanded an explanation.
Bryce, feeling a bit guilty under her gaze, quickly clarified, "Jesse, you know I've always been careful. I remember every single thing you've told me."
Jesse had mentioned that one child was enough because of the pain, and Bryce had agreed.
But now, with Bryan not even two years old, Bryce was starting to believe the pregnancy theory, especially since they had been through this once before.
Trying to calm her, Jesse held her chest and said, "You better light some candles for our ancestors, hoping it's just a stomachache and not a pregnancy."
The memory of Bryan's painful birth made Jesse shudder with fear.
