Estrella took a sip of water, turning to look at him.
Jason caught her eye and managed a small smile before settling back into a calm demeanor. "It's been thirty years," he said softly. "At this point, who can really say what was right or wrong?"
His calmness tugged at Estrella's heart as she gazed at him.
He must have thought long and hard and made many compromises to come back.
Locking eyes with him, Jason said, "I came back to see you, Isaac, and mom."
Estrella's gaze drifted to the twinkling lights of the town below and the stars scattered across the night sky, her eyes reflecting the celestial glow.
The mountaintop night was serene, filled only with the rustling of the breeze.
In that moment, it felt like the universe had shrunk to just her and Jason.
Jason continued to watch her, admiring her profile. "Kristin always said you were a lucky charm," he remarked, noticing her moist lips as she drank, swallowing hard himself before taking a sip of water. He gently added, "Dad agreed to let me take you with me. I bet your dad would agree too."
Estrella turned back, her eyes swiftly losing their starry sheen to display a hint of disdain. "Jason, don't be so sure. Have you asked your mom or mine if they're okay with it?"
She knew their fathers felt guilty over past grievances; they'd hardly refuse Jason's request to take her and Isaac away, even if they harbored a thousand objections.
"Even if they wanted our lives, they wouldn't say no," she pointed out.
Before Jason could respond, Estrella pressed, "And have you even considered what I want?"
Jason remained silent, caught off guard by her questions.
He was merely testing the waters.
After a brief pause, he teased, "If you won't come with me, can I at least take Isaac? I won't be marrying anyone else or be with another woman."
The suggestion made Estrella burst into laughter.
Resting her hand on the car's hood, she looked at him amusedly. "Jason, do you hear yourself? Giving Isaac to you, how could you even ask that?"
"You didn't even ask if Isaac wants to go with you."
As Jason hesitated, Estrella continued, slightly annoyed, "If you want kids, have your own."
Isaac was her miracle, and she wouldn't hand him over to anyone, even his father.
Estrella's irritation was palpable, but Jason countered, "That child isn't yours alone; he's ours."
He hoped that taking Isaac might compel Estrella to follow.
