Before the car even roared to life, Jason, with his left hand casually resting on the steering wheel and his right hand clutching his phone, swiped the screen to answer a call and calmly said, "Dad."
On the other end, Landon inquired, "Jason, do you have time for lunch tomorrow? Let's catch up!"
Jason agreed calmly, "Sure."
After Jason agreed to meet, Landon earnestly advised him not to overwork himself and to take care of his health, reminding him not to wear himself out at such a young age.
Jason promised he would.
After hanging up, Jason didn’t rush to start the car and leave. Instead, he leaned back lazily in his seat.
Reaching for a pack of cigarettes next to him and then remembering Estrella’s dislike for his smoking habit, he tossed the pack back.
Had it not been for Catrina’s drama and the subsequent DNA test, Jason would have never doubted his parentage; he never had any reason to, given the love and care Landon and Kristin had showered him with.
Sitting in the car, lost in thought, Jason reminisced about the past, especially his moments with Estrella.
Picking up his phone, he texted Estrella, "I miss you!"
After a long wait without a reply, a call came through from her.
Answering the phone, Jason said tenderly, "Did you get to rest?"
On the other end, Isaac's childish voice came through, "Mom's in the shower."
Caught off guard, realizing it wasn’t his wife but his son, Jason quickly adjusted, asking, "Are you sleeping with Mom tonight?"
Isaac replied, "Yeah! I’m playing my video game right now, bye Uncle!"
Jason, with a smile, corrected him, "I’m not your uncle, I’m your dad."
Isaac, preoccupied with his game and barely paying attention, mumbled, "Okay, dad, bye."
Without waiting for a response, Isaac hung up and dove back into his game.
Isaac had called back because he saw Jason's message and didn’t want him to worry about waiting for Estrella.
To Isaac, as long as his mom was Estrella, it didn’t matter who he called dad.
Despite knowing Isaac was more interested in his game and might not have fully grasped their conversation, Jason couldn't help but feel happy, even if it was just a polite acknowledgment.
Isaac’s innocence reminded Jason so much of Estrella when she was younger.
He envied Isaac, getting to sleep next to his beloved.
Although he couldn’t see Isaac at that moment, Jason could imagine him concentrating on his game.
Feeling better, Jason finally started the car and left the underground parking.
