Jason lost his temper, but Estrella stayed surprisingly calm. “Jason, you know how it is. Once a woman hits 30, finding someone becomes a whole different ball game. I’m already 29, and I’ve got a kid in tow. If I don’t start looking now, when will I?”
Jason couldn’t help but laugh. “You, Estrella, having trouble getting hitched?” He added, “Who the hell wouldn’t want to marry you?”
Estrella cracked a smile at his reaction. “Well, thanks for the vote of confidence, Mr. Jason. Let’s hope your good words come true, and I get myself married off this year.”
Not wanting to continue the bickering, she glanced at his car. “Move your car, will you? Stop blocking the way every single day.”
Estrella’s refusal to engage further, even suggesting she’d get married within the year, only made Jason more irritated.
As she turned to leave, Jason reached out and pulled her back.
Estrella stumbled into him, then pushed away, annoyed. “Jason, what the hell? Don’t tell me you’re having second thoughts and want to get back together. With that attitude, not in this lifetime.” She added, “Move your damn car. Stop showing off in front of me all the time.”
Seriously! Just speak plainly. If this is the attitude, who the hell would put up with it?
Estrella's firm stance and her demeanor with Korey made Jason even more infuriated. He managed only a sarcastic laugh. “Get back together? If I ever beg you to get back together, call me a fool and I’ll call you queen.”
Estrella retorted, “Dream on, you fool. I wouldn’t bother.”
With that, she walked over to her own car, grabbed a piece of paper and a pen, and slapped them onto Jason’s car. “Here, write down what you just said. Promise you’ll never try to get back with me or interfere in my life again.”
She placed the pen and paper on the trunk of his car. Jason's expression went through several changes before he finally asked, “Estrella, what are you trying to do?”
“Exactly what it sounds like,” Estrella replied calmly. “Considering how many promises you've made me write, one from you isn’t too much to ask, is it?”
After saying that, she thrust the pen back into his hand. “Your turn. You’re good at this.”
Jason took the pen and tossed it into a nearby trash can. “Enough already!”
Estrella challenged him. “Oh? Getting cold feet about what you just said?” Pulling out another pen from her pocket, she added, “We’re adults, act like it.”
Their squabble was more reminiscent of a schoolyard tiff than anything adults would do.
Jason, partly annoyed and partly amused, threw away the pen again. Estrella, unfazed, simply produced another.
Unable to help himself, Jason burst out laughing. “How many pens do you have in there?”
Estrella ignored him, urging him to hurry up.
Jason flatly refused. “Not happening.”
She knew better than to expect him to play along. “Fine, I’ll write it, and you just sign,” she said, reverting to their old ways.
Jason frowned at that. “Estrella.”
She ignored him, quickly drafting the agreement and pushing it toward him. “Sign it.”
If he had any intentions of rekindling anything, he’d better drop the act and stop picking fights.
She was determined to set things straight today, to clear up their past and any lingering ties.
Looking at the agreement Estrella pushed toward him, Jason felt annoyed. What nonsense had he made her promise before, and what was this she was making him agree to now?
As they stared at each other, Estrella refusing to take back the paper and pen, Jason reached out, gently pinching her face, drawing her closer.
With a teasing look in his eyes, Estrella taunted, “What, grandson wants a kiss?”
Calling him grandson, Jason struggled to hold back a laugh, letting go of her face. “I’ll move the car. You go back to sleep.”
