Estrella said, "Serene just came to see me. She shared some news." She paused for a moment and added, "She's doing well now."
"Ah!" Jason replied, "Drew's been really good to her."
Estrella gave him a playful glance. "Well, speaking of which, you did play matchmaker, didn't you?"
Jason, hands buried in his jeans pockets, couldn't help but chuckle.
His laugh was warm and radiant, even more captivating than the crescent moon hanging in the sky.
The night was serene, so quiet that their footsteps on the sandy beach could be clearly heard.
It had been a long while since they last walked like this. Even two years ago, they never had such leisure, always caught up in the never-ending demands of life and work.
The gentle sea breeze pushed the waves closer, and Estrella picked up a large conch shell washed ashore, listening to the ocean's whisper inside, thinking of giving it to Isaac.
Seeing Estrella so relaxed, Jason slowed down, the breeze tousling his dark hair. He looked down at Estrella and asked, "Estrella, if I asked you to come away with me, would you?"
This return to Ravenwood wasn't meant to be a long one for him, primarily for her and Isaac. Despite unresolved issues lurking, the sight of Estrella and Isaac made it hard for him to leave.
He wanted to try, to fight against fate, to do everything in his power to keep the three of them together, to protect her and Isaac, rather than resigning to the only option of giving up.
Jason's voice was tender as he spoke, prompting Estrella to stop.
She looked up at Jason, then turned to gaze at the endless sea, her voice as calm as the tranquil waters, "Jason, my parents have raised me for nearly thirty years. I'm everything to them."
She paused there.
After a moment, she turned to face Jason standing beside her.
The sea breeze gently blew strands of her hair across her face as she said, "Jason, life is long, and we're not bound to love only one person throughout it."
Estrella's serene refusal saw Jason turn away, his gaze falling on the sea's quietly rolling waves, his thoughts as complex and profound as the ocean itself. One moment calm, the next, waves could crash in.
Perhaps, even a storm might brew soon.
These two years, he admitted his fault, having let her go, failing to keep his promise, and not standing firm till the end.
Even through hardships, it was he who caused her sorrow.
Contemplating for a while, Estrella looked towards the distant sea and continued, "You're moved now seeing me and Isaac, but with time, you might not overcome your inner conflicts. Don't make it harder on yourself."
Though Jason said nothing, Estrella could somewhat guess the reason for his resignation.
He might convince himself now, but could he for a lifetime? Could he look at her without being reminded of certain people and events? She didn't want him to live like that either.
She couldn't leave with him, unable to abandon Cole and Autumn.
As a wave receded, Estrella glanced at him, "It's getting late, I'm heading back to rest."
With that, she didn't wait for a response, turning towards the hotel, with Jason following behind.
Estrella's suite was one floor below Jason's.
When the elevator reached her floor, Estrella merely glanced at him before stepping out.
As the elevator doors slowly closed, removing her from his sight, Jason's eyes lost their spark.
Back in his room, Jason found himself unable to sleep.
