Estrella and Isaac had already left when Mr. Jason's attention was gently nudged back to reality by the cautious call of a middle-aged man beside him. With a composed air, he gracefully entered his car. As they drove past the department store, he couldn't help but glance back at the spot where he thought he had seen the one person he most wished to encounter. It almost felt like she was right there, close to him, within reach.
---
By ten o'clock that evening, when Estrella returned with Isaac, now fast asleep in her arms, Autumn couldn't help but fuss over them. "Oh, my little treasure, don't catch a cold," she exclaimed as she swiftly wrapped Isaac in a cozy blanket she grabbed from the sofa, making sure he wouldn't get chilled.
Cole descended the stairs just then, which immediately changed Estrella's demeanor. "Cole, you finally decided to show up?" Her tone quickly shifted from accusation to directive, "Make sure you're back at the office first thing tomorrow."
Cole, rubbing his chest as if in discomfort, countered, "I've been feeling a bit off these past few days; I think I need to check in with the doctor. You can handle the office, Estrella."
Estrella could only stare at him, her gaze filled with skepticism. After all, every check-up had confirmed he was in perfect health. Despite her obvious disdain, Cole added, "I'll stay home with Isaac." He then offered, "Your mom and I will put him to bed tonight. You should get some rest."
Estrella was left speechless. Isaac was perfectly capable of sleeping on his own; they didn't need to fuss over him. Deep down, she recognized that Cole and Autumn wanted to keep her close, but if she wasn't by their side, where else could she possibly be?
Seeing Cole carry Isaac upstairs, Autumn chided him for letting Estrella manage everything alone. Though her words seemed caring, her true wish was for Cole to never step foot in the office again, leaving Estrella to run it by herself. That would give her peace of mind, knowing the company didn't lack for one less person.
After the older couple had taken Isaac upstairs, Estrella sighed deeply, feeling somewhat helpless, and then retreated to her room.
Under the shower, with her eyes closed and letting the warm water wash over her, Estrella's heart felt an aching emptiness, as if a piece was missing. The scene outside the department store earlier that day kept replaying in her mind.
After her shower, she settled into bed with a book, but soon drifted off to sleep. It had been ages since she last dreamt, yet tonight, she dreamt of Jason, of her school days, of two years ago.
Waking up abruptly, she saw the early morning light and Isaac sitting beside her, watching her intently with his chin in his hands. Her mood instantly lifted, and after a playful exchange, they started their day together.
After breakfast with Isaac, Estrella drove to the city council for a meeting. Her secretary, Joshua, was already waiting with the day's agenda. "Ms. Estrella, here's what we'll be discussing today," he informed her.
