The car was getting closer to downtown, and the doctor was doing everything he could to save Isaac. Just as we were about to reach the hospital, Isaac stirred slightly. His eyelids fluttered, his lips quivered as if he wanted to say something, but he couldn't even open his eyes fully.
Seeing this, the doctor looked up at Estrella and Jason and said, "He's showing signs of life, his breathing is starting to stabilize."
Right after that, the machines around us started reacting more vigorously.
Hearing the doctor and noticing the machines' responses, Estrella let out a relieved laugh and said, "Looks like you really missed your mom's nagging, huh?"
With that, she kissed Isaac's hand tenderly.
Jason, seeing Isaac waking up, couldn't help but smile in relief too.
Soon, the ambulance reached the hospital. As Isaac was wheeled into the emergency room for further examination, he struggled to open his eyes and managed to say, “Mom, I was just having too much fun.” And then, “I’m sorry, Mom.”
Estrella, who had been holding back her tears, felt them cascade down her cheeks at Isaac’s apology. Wiping her tears away, she smiled and caressed his forehead, “No, sweetheart, you weren’t having too much fun, and you have nothing to be sorry for.”
After Isaac was taken for examination, Cole and Autumn rushed in, frantic with worry. Holly was with them, and Autumn was crying, blaming herself nonstop.
Jason tried to comfort them, saying Isaac had already regained consciousness and even called for his mom.
Not long after, Bryce and Erik arrived. Without a word, Bryce went straight for Korey, throwing punches at him.
Given the circumstances, Korey didn’t fight back, taking Bryce’s blows silently until Erik pulled Bryce away, telling him to stop.
Later, the entire Ledford family arrived, and Catrina was taken away by the police.
In the emergency room, after the examinations, the doctor told us that Isaac needed to be admitted. Following the chill he had experienced, he was now feverish and receiving IV fluids.
Cole and Autumn stood silently in the room, overwhelmed by the thought that all the troubles they had encountered over the years, including Isaac’s recent ordeal, stemmed from them.
Looking down at Isaac, his face flushed with fever and a cooling patch on his forehead, mumbling incoherently in his sleep.
Grayson announced that Erik was expecting, prompting Bryce to take her home and advising the rest to do the same, though he stayed behind to help.
Outside the ward, Jason, drained from the ordeal, slumped on a bench, his back against the wall, and exhaled a cloud of smoke as if to release the pent-up tension and fear.
He mused, “If anything had happened to Isaac, I don’t think Estrella could have borne it.”
Estrella was always the rock, unflappable in the face of adversity, but the fear in her eyes during the ambulance ride was something Jason had never seen before, revealing a vulnerability he never knew she possessed.
Unbeknownst to him, he was also not faring well, realizing that if anything were to happen to Isaac and Estrella, it would be unbearable for him too.
Grayson, patting Jason’s shoulder, reassured him, “It’s all okay now.”
