Cole shifted his gaze from Autumn, his face giving nothing away. "Next time I run into Keith Amber, I'll ask him," he said flatly.
The thought of Erik getting married soon really hit home for Cole. Time sure flies.
Not too long ago, she was loudly proclaiming she'd never get married or have kids, and now she's planning a wedding.
Changing the subject, Cole said, "Estrella, Jesse doesn’t have any siblings. If she needs any help, can you give her a hand?"
"Sure thing, Dad," Estrella replied.
"Every time we hit a serious topic, you change the subject. Don't you want your daughter to get married soon?" Autumn teased.
"My daughter’s been married before; I’m not in a rush," Cole responded coolly.
"Has she ever had a proper wedding? Aren’t you worried?" Autumn pressed further.
Cole looked up sharply, seizing the moment. "My daughter never had a wedding because of Jason’s mistake, not mine."
Autumn was taken aback, momentarily speechless. "Well, sorry about that, Jason! I was actually trying to say something nice about you. Total misfire!"
Estrella, trying to defuse the tension, served Autumn some food. "Mom, your words were fine. Maybe just leave it at that next time."
Autumn forced a smile. "Let’s just eat."
After dinner, when the family retreated to their bedrooms, Estrella received a couple of calls from a daycare center and a chess club for Isaac, suggesting it might be time for a visit.
As Estrella hung up, Isaac, fresh from his bath and in his fluffy pajamas, bounced onto the bed.
Sitting beside him, Estrella ruffled his hair. "Buddy, we need to talk. You’ll be starting school soon, and you're a big boy now. How about you sleep in the room across from mine from now on?"
Estrella had been reluctant to let go, but now that Isaac was growing up and doing better, she felt it was time for him to start becoming more independent.
Isaac, clutching his feet, shook his head at Estrella. He didn’t want to sleep alone; he wanted to stay with her.
“You're a big boy now,” Estrella reminded him.
Just then, Jason walked out of the shower, and Isaac turned to him with a defiant look.
“What’s that look for, buddy?” Jason laughed, rubbing his damp hair.
Estrella explained, “He thinks you’re the big man and should sleep in the other room.”
