"Mmm," Estrella murmured, resting her head on his shoulder, her eyes gently closing as she nodded.
They held each other for what felt like forever before finally heading back to bed.
The night was calm. Jason watched Estrella sleeping beside him, softly brushed her cheek, and then pulled her closer.
---
The next morning, at the café.
Holly arrived right on time, spotting Jason already seated.
Slipping off her coat and hanging it on the rack, she greeted him with a grin, "I thought we'd never cross paths again. Yet here you are, Jason, asking to meet up so soon."
Jason didn't respond, just calmly poured her a cup of coffee.
Holly stared at him for a while, noticing he wouldn't look at her or speak. She pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down.
Jason was always so quiet around her. She couldn't help but wonder if he was the same with Estrella.
After taking a sip of the coffee he'd poured, Holly broke the silence with a smile, "This about Estrella? Are you here to strike a deal for her sake?"
Serene was in trouble, and all Holly needed to do was hint at something from seven years ago, and the police would quickly turn their attention to Estrella. Even if she couldn't remember that time, it would be tough to clear her name.
Even if Jason and the others believed her, the law only cared about evidence.
When Holly mentioned Estrella, Jason finally looked up at her.
Their eyes met, and Holly, seeing Jason's steady gaze, remarked, "Oh, Jason! You don't love Estrella enough. If you really did, you'd have married me to keep this secret buried forever. That would truly show your devotion."
Holly found it ironic that every interaction with Jason was about Estrella, about keeping her from mentioning the fire.
She tried to console herself that Jason reached out not just for Estrella's sake but because they had known each other for years and shared a bond.
But every time she saw his indifference, how he only wanted to see her when there was something about Estrella, she couldn't help but feel resentful.
It's human nature to want what we can't have, especially for those, like them, raised in privilege without facing hardships. The more something is out of reach, the more they want it.
She felt this way, and so did Jason.
At Holly's sarcasm, Jason asked coolly, "Did you have something to do with Serene's fall?"
His blunt question caught Holly off guard.
