Sylvia immediately retorted, "How is that even possible?"
Penelope sighed in relief. "Then never mind. I just saw the news online that Ashton and Reina called off their engagement."
"Whatever he does has absolutely nothing to do with me anymore," Sylvia said flatly.
Penelope went quiet. A phrase suddenly drifted into her mind: *A beautiful beginning that withered into nothing.*
They had once loved each other so deeply, yet it had all decayed into this.
She still vividly remembered how desperately Sylvia used to love Ashton in college. To celebrate his birthday, Sylvia had saved up her meager part-time wages for months just to buy him an inexpensive watch. She had no idea that the watches Ashton casually wore on any given day cost millions of dollars.
At the time, Penelope had watched the exchange with a twisted sense of amusement, maliciously hoping to see Sylvia humiliate herself.
To her utter shock, Ashton hadn't rejected the gift at all. A man accustomed to wearing millions on his wrist wore that cheap watch without a second thought.
Sylvia would also buy cheap corner store snacks and feed them to him. She would shove spicy strips or cheap street food into his mouth, and though Ashton clearly despised the taste, he never complained. He was older than her, and he indulged her whims effortlessly.
She didn't know that his family strictly forbade him from touching processed junk food. She had been unknowingly bullying him the entire time.
To save money, Sylvia always bought the cheapest clothes and shoes she could find. They looked cute but were made of terrible fabric, fraying after just a few washes. Unable to stand it, Ashton practically took over her entire wardrobe. He had a brilliant eye for fashion, flawlessly picking out outfits and jewelry that highlighted her beauty.
Sylvia was naturally gorgeous, and with Ashton styling her, she became a breathtaking presence on campus. On several occasions, when Ashton arrived to pick her up, he would catch her chatting with male classmates, her bright laughter drawing enchanted looks from the boys.
Ashton never intervened. He considered it utterly beneath him to "compete" with college boys. He would simply lean against his car, a cold, sharp smirk playing on his lips, and dial her number.
During that period, Sylvia used to complain that her boyfriend was a bit too cold, acting as if he didn't care whether she was there or not.
Penelope had thought to herself: *He comes from a terrifyingly powerful dynasty. He was raised to have the world at his feet. Isn't it perfectly normal for him to act arrogant?*
Penelope pulled herself out of her memories. "One more thing. The producer of *Campfire Chronicles* called me to apologize personally. All the maliciously edited videos have been taken down, and they've uploaded the raw footage that proves your innocence. I guess you finally got justice. They want you back on the show. Are you in?"
Sylvia thought about it for a second. "No, I won't be returning. I'll be far too busy preparing for the wedding."
Penelope raised a brow. "Alright then. I'll officially turn them down."
Declining the offer wasn't solely because of the wedding. The production team's tactics had been incredibly vile, and there was no guarantee they wouldn't backstab her again.
It was like being slapped across the face and then handed a piece of candy. The candy could never erase the sting of the blow.
However, the producer of *Campfire Chronicles* certainly wouldn't have called to apologize out of the goodness of his heart. Combined with Sydney Brooks suddenly securing a spot on the cast, it was blatantly obvious who was pulling the strings behind the scenes.
But Sylvia had absolutely no desire to dig into it, and Penelope knew better than to ask.
