"Furthermore, I despise you. I would never put in a good word for you."
Reina's bluntness made it crystal clear that begging her would be entirely pointless, so Sylvia turned on her heel and walked toward the office.
Julian was in the middle of a conversation. Hearing voices from inside, Sylvia waited patiently in the hallway.
It sounded as though he was trying to convince a department head to stay.
"...Alright, I respect your decision. If you ever wish to return, the door is always open."
Julian escorted the man out, instantly spotting Sylvia the moment he stepped into the corridor. "What's wrong? You look incredibly pale."
Sylvia looked up at him. "Did Reina Winslet come to you recently, asking you to perform her surgery?"
Julian paused to think. "Yes, something like that happened."
"And you turned her down?" Sylvia asked urgently.
"Yes, I refused."
"When was this?"
"About half a month ago. Why? Is this important?"
"It's nothing."
The timeline aligned perfectly.
Ashton's claim that he would call off the attack if she returned to him was a complete lie. His entire crusade was simply vengeance on behalf of Reina.
The only person who truly mattered in his heart was Rebecca Winslet.
How could she have been foolish enough to believe his words?
She knew better than anyone that the man was a master of deception.
Even though he was clearly shouldering immense pressure himself.
Sylvia didn't believe for a second that Ashton's ruthless campaign was as trivial as Julian made it sound.
She didn't want to cry, but the tears simply wouldn't stop. "I'm sorry... I don't know what's wrong with me."
"You don't need to apologize. Cry as much as you need to," Julian said, his tone incredibly soft.
"Just... when you're done crying, could you give me an answer?"
His gentle teasing drew a watery laugh from her. She choked back a sob, looking at him through tear-blurred eyes.
"I will."
Being with Julian didn't bring the volatile, heart-wrenching emotional highs she had experienced with Ashton, but it was incredibly safe and comfortable.
She wanted to cherish this man with everything she had.
