The speaker was Ryan Winslet. Dressed in a dark blue suit, he possessed an elegant, unhurried grace, his features radiating an undeniable warmth that instantly commanded respect and admiration.
The director hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Alright, go ahead."
Sylvia gave Ryan a grateful nod, then took a deep breath to steady herself.
In truth, this wasn't the character she had been given sides for. She had missed her chance for that original role, and regardless of whether she was late or not, no one owed her a second chance.
But she had fought for this new opportunity herself, and she refused to fail.
When Sylvia opened her eyes again, her entire demeanor had shifted.
Staring at the imaginary photos on her phone, a thick layer of tears welled in her eyes. She fought desperately to maintain her composure, her body trembling violently with the humiliating, horrifying rage of discovering her partner's betrayal while carrying his child.
The stranger on the other end sent a second batch of files—a security video of her lover at the hospital.
He was pulling the plug on her bedridden mother's oxygen tank.
Sylvia collapsed to her knees, her hands instinctively flying to her stomach as if shielding her unborn child.
She gasped for air, breathing heavily as if the sheer horror of the footage had violently knocked the wind out of her.
He was the person closest to her, always acting like the perfect, devoted son, yet he had done something so monstrous in secret!
The imaginary phone slipped from her trembling hands. She couldn't hold it anymore, yet her bloodshot eyes remained glued to the floor, staring at the horrifying scenes playing out.
It was as if she was burning the images permanently into her soul.
Before she could even process the grief, a sudden realization struck her. She grabbed the edge of the bed and pulled herself up, scrambling around like a weak, frantic patient desperately searching for a pill bottle.
In the video footage, she had seen him holding a very familiar prescription bottle.
Finally, she found it.
With trembling fingers, she unrolled the informational insert, her eyes glued to the paper. She read it rapidly, then painstakingly slow, the terrifying side effects flooding her mind. She stared at the words over and over, as if struggling to comprehend them.
Just then, the electronic beep of the front door's fingerprint lock echoed in her mind.
Sylvia blinked, snapping back to reality. Her eyes cleared as she smiled politely at the director. "I'm finished."
This time, the notoriously picky director actually nodded. "Your performance had a lot of incredible layers. Leave your contact information, and we'll notify you when we have news."
Waiting for news usually meant things were still up in the air. After all, casting a role wasn't just about acting skills; it often involved a complex web of behind-the-scenes financial interests.
During Zoe's audition, the director hadn't stopped her, simply watching with a slight frown the entire time. When other actors auditioned, he had cut them off the moment they did something he didn't like, refusing to give them a chance to finish.
But Ryan Winslet simply spoke up from the sidelines. "I think we should just lock her in."
His tone was gentle, yet it carried an unquestionable authority, the unmistakable aura of someone used to being in charge.
Hearing this, the director immediately finalized the decision, officially casting Sylvia for the role and asking her to stay behind to sign the contract.
Sylvia cast a lingering glance at Ryan, completely utterly baffled as to why he was going out of his way to help her.
She had never believed in free lunches, utterly convinced that he had to be plotting something.
