Although it had been three years since she last set foot on campus, the chemical ratios were permanently burned into her memory. In less than twenty minutes, Summer successfully synthesized a fresh batch.
This time, she secured it in a heavy-duty transport case before racing back across campus.
Sprinting the entire way, she arrived at the auditorium breathless and dripping with sweat, just in the nick of time. The student thanked her profusely and rushed the vial to the presentation stage.
Her mission accomplished, Summer slipped out the back doors.
As she walked along a quiet campus path heading to her dorm, she spotted a tiny boy, no older than four, collapsed on the sidewalk.
A small crowd of students had gathered around him, but no one dared to touch him for fear of making things worse.
Someone nervously shouted out, asking if anyone had medical training.
Summer had always adored children. After years of agonizing heartbreak over her failed pregnancies, seeing a child in distress triggered her immediate protective instincts. She rushed forward without a second thought.
"I'm a medical professional! Let me through."
The crowd parted instantly. Just as she reached for the boy, a student suggested someone film the interaction to protect her from any liability.
Summer barked that saving a life was more important, though several students pulled out their phones anyway, capturing the heroic moment.
The unconscious boy had thick, dark hair, incredibly long eyelashes, and pale, flawless skin. Even at such a young age, he was undeniably handsome. His designer clothes screamed old money, but a quick pulse and symptom check revealed something shocking: he had simply passed out from low blood sugar due to severe hunger.
"He's going to be fine. It's just a sudden drop in blood sugar. I'm taking him to the infirmary."
Summer scooped him up and carried him straight to the campus clinic. After hooking him up to a glucose IV, his vitals finally stabilized.
At some point during the chaos, the little boy's tiny fingers had locked onto hers in a death grip. She tried to gently pry herself loose several times, but he refused to let go. Defeated, she pulled up a chair and sat by his bed, waiting for him to wake up.
