Underwater: The Silent Luna novel Chapter 52

Chapter 52

Amber had always believed that Meadow’s tears on that first day meant she was just like the others, fragile, disappointed, repulsed

by her crippled son. She had assumed Meadow would cry, then obey. Cry, then break. Cry, then eventually run away.

But Meadow looked up now, eyes steady, hands moving with calm clarity.

“I was sad because no one told me it was him. And I heard he was a mean man.”

Victoria translated faithfully.

Amber blinked.

Of all the answers she had expected, that was not one. The honesty disarmed her.

“So what made you change your mind?” Amber asked, suspicion still lacing her tone.

Meadow signed again, slower, choosing her words carefully.

“He is kind to me. Nothing like what I heard.”

Victoria translated, and Amber felt something tighten, and loosen, inside her chest.

Kind? Ethan? To her?

Amber had lived long enough to know Ethan wasn’t gentle with most people. His heart was a fortress. His temper was

unpredictable. His disability made him prickly. His past wounds made him distant.

But with Meadow…

He seemed different.

Amber didn’t like the softness she felt creeping into her thoughts.

So she hardened them again.

“I hope you know being his wife does not mean you will be Luna,” Amber said sharply. “Ashley is the one I will hand over to once

she and Joseph claim each other.”

It was the cruelest reminder she could give, one designed to crush whatever small confidence Meadow had begun to build.

Victoria stiffened in outrage.

Meadow swallowed but did not flinch.

Then she signed with quiet resolve:

“I do not care about things like that. I am not interested in being Luna. I am content with just being his wife.”

Victoria shot her a look, half disbelief, half pity.

Why would Meadow settle for so little?

Why would she accept scraps?

Was she truly that fragile?

Or was she simply that attached to Ethan already?

Amber, however, interpreted it differently.

Perhaps Meadow had no ambition.

Perhaps she had no schemes.

Perhaps she wasn’t trying to steal power or influence.

The tension in her shoulders eased, just a little.

And Ashley noticed.

Ashley’s nails dug into her teacup.

She could not afford Amber softening toward Meadow.

She needed Meadow beneath her heel, not beside her.

Because if Amber accepted Meadow fully…

If the family approved her…

If Ethan did not cut her loose…

Then Meadow, mute or not, would be the true wife of the First Son.

Ashley’s pregnancy would mean less.

Her role would be questioned.

Her Luna dream would shatter.

Chapter 52

She had worked too hard and manipulated too much to let a mute girl ruin her ascendancy.

Ashley smiled sweetly, hiding her panic behind perfect teeth.

“That being said,” Ashley said brightly, “I guess we will be sisters now.”

Meadow lifted her eyes just enough to acknowledge her.

Then she picked up her teacup and sipped her black tea.

No nod.

No smile.

No sign of warmth.

Ashley’s smile faltered.

The silence that followed was thick and uncomfortable.

Amber watched Meadow closely, studying every movement, every expression.

The girl truly was beautiful.

Striking in a delicate, rare way.

And if it weren’t for her mutism, the one flaw Amber convinced herself invalidated everything, she would have been a perfect Luna.

A stunning Luna.

A capable partner.

A worthy match for Ethan.

Even Amber could see that.

And deep down, a thought slithered into Amber’s mind:

If Meadow gives us daughters… they would be breathtaking. Her bloodline would elevate ours.

It was a thought she would never admit aloud.

When the tea finally ended, each woman retreated to her respective wing.

Meadow exhaled the breath she had been holding since the table.

Her hands were stiff from tension.

Her chest was tight from holding back emotion.

She walked with Victoria to her wing, feeling drained.

Victoria ushered her inside her room, and Meadow allowed herself to collapse onto the bed.

Just a short nap, she told herself.

Just enough to clear her mind before she checked the progress of her art studio.

Before she faced the rest of the day without Ethan.
