Chapter 294
Somehow, Ashley was not sorry for Alpha Malcolm. He had done the same thing to others. He had taken over packs too, and now another man had taken his. That did not make Sebastien right, and it did not make the situation less ugly, but Ashley could not force herself to feel pity for Malcolm. Men who played with power often forgot that one day someone worse could come for theirs. She pushed that thought aside and stopped the truck at the gate, pulling together the face she needed to wear. She could not appear bold at first. She needed to seem desperate, broken, and harmless. That part was not hard. She had enough real hurt inside her to
borrow from.
A brawny, tanned, shirtless man came to her window side. He looked dangerous in the rough, careless way of men who were used to making people obey them. His chest was broad, his arms thick, and his face carried no warmth at all. Ashley wound the glass down and forced her expression to shake with fear. She let the ache from Joseph’s rejection rise in her eyes because it was useful now. If pain could not leave her, then at least she could use it.
“You’re not from this pack. State your business,” he said with a gruff voice.
“I want to seek asylum here. I can no longer live in my former pack,” she said, allowing tears to well in her eyes.
It was partially true, and that made it easier to say. She could no longer live the way she used to in her former pack. She had been unable to go out and mingle for weeks since Joseph dumped her. It was understandable that a woman would feel wounded enough to leave. She simply tapped into that humiliation, that loneliness, that raw rejection, and placed it in her voice. But the man did not look moved. His eyes swept over her face slowly, not with sympathy but suspicion, as if he could smell the parts of her story she was
not saying.
“There is no home for you here,” the man said.
“Let Alpha Sebastien decide,” Ashley said, wiping away her tears when she realised they were useless on him.
The man growled at her, and Claire answered inside her with a growl of her own. Ashley wanted to growl back so badly that her jaw tightened, but she controlled herself. This was not the time for pride. She needed entry, not a fight.
“He won’t see you. He is occupied. You think we do not know your plans. There is no room for you here. Leave now, or I will make
you,” he said.
Ashley stared at him. The fear inside her shifted slightly, making room for irritation. He had said plans, as if he knew something. As if she had already been judged before she opened her mouth. Crying had failed, and begging like a weak woman would not get her anywhere with this man. She turned off the truck’s engine and watched his eyes narrow.
“What is my plan, Brawny?” she asked.
He raised an eyebrow, disbelief crossing his face. Ashley opened the door and stepped out before she could think herself out of it. Her legs felt steady enough, which was a blessing because her stomach was not. The guards around them turned their attention towards her, and she knew she had become a problem. Maybe that was good. Maybe being quiet would bury her faster.
“I beg you, please, tell me what you believe my plan is,” she said.

Chapter 294
“Woman, get into that truck and get the fuck out of here,” he ordered.
Ashley smiled, though her heart was beating fast.
“At least you didn’t call me a bitch. I appreciate the gentlemanly approach, but you have to tell me what you believe my plan is
because that is why you are denying me access to see Alpha Sebastien. I deserve to know why I will spend my last dime and drive all
the way here only to be turned back by a guard,” she said, staring at him.
His face hardened. For a moment, Ashley thought he would strike her. He looked angry enough to do it. Instead, he looked past her
and gave an order that made her blood run cold.
“Lock her up,” the man said.
Ashley’s smile died immediately.
“Impound the truck and lock her arse up. No need to tell Alpha; I will deal with the bitch. She needs some discipline,” the man said.
