Chapter 282
Meadow did not tell them she was the one who negotiated their release. There was no need to. Her main aim was to ensure that
people did not think Ethan and Joseph had given up on them. She did not want the loyal workers and friends in that cell thinking their Alphas had abandoned them or traded comfort for silence. Since Levi had made it his duty to remain by Amber’s side in the
hospital, Meadow had to make sure they were released because Levi was not always around to ensure they were cared for.
He had instructed that food be carried to them, but he was not around to ensure it was happening. The anonymous Alpha was yet t reach out to Levi, and Levi was still waiting for the call. Everything was suspended. Everyone was waiting. Meadow had decided that waiting could not include leaving people to rot in cells when she could at least try to stop it.
Ethan entered his room and saw a very exhausted Meadow.
“What did you give her in exchange for this?” he asked, trying to control his anger.
Meadow looked at him in shock.
“Ethan,” she linked him.
He shook his head and wheeled his chair closer to her. His fear made his movements sharper than usual. He reached for her and held her face in his palm, forcing himself to be gentle even though panic was trying to tear through him.
“What did she take from you, my love? What did you give her for this?” he asked.
He was afraid Cynthia had asked Meadow to leave him. The thought alone made something inside him twist violently. Cynthia knew how to hurt people through what they loved. If she had demanded Meadow stay away from him, or give up something of herself, or accept some humiliation in exchange for the prisoners, Ethan did not know what he would do.
“Nothing. In fact, I was surprised too. She was irritated with your mark on my neck, and it seemed like she was dealing with issues simultaneously. I told her she wouldn’t gain anything from locking them up, and she granted my request,” Meadow linked.
Ethan frowned at her because that was weird behaviour from Cynthia. Cynthia always wanted something in exchange for gestures. Always. Even when the gesture looked small, she would find a way to turn it into debt. For her to release people simply because Meadow asked meant something had been off.
“I begged her, of course, and even called her Luna,” Meadow linked him with a small smile.
Ethan stared at her, and for a second, he did not know whether to laugh or be angry that his wife had forced herself to do that.
“You should have seen the look on Victoria’s face when she had to translate for Cynthia. It looked like she had thorns in her throat. The Luna part came out with difficulty. I was worried it would mess my plea up. But whatever occupied Cynthia’s mind was too strong for her to notice. She wanted us out very quickly, so she granted our request, and we saw to it that her men followed through,” Meadow explained.
Ethan relaxed a bit.

Chapter 282
He did not want to admit it, but Cynthia had been looking off lately. He had noticed it in the way she moved through the corridor, the way she drank more, the way her pride seemed thinner than before. It was not his problem, and it never would be. She made her
bed, so it was best she lay on it.
“I want you to send them to their various homes, so no one will use them against us again. Tell Camila I will take my sessions at her house. Whoever is after Dr James knows he has skipped town and would not disturb her anymore,” Meadow linked with a smile.
Ethan did not know how to explain that the attack on Camila’s husband was mainly because of her. Meadow still did not fully understand how deep her own connection to the enemy might go. He knew he would have to find a way to explain it to her, but not
carelessly. Not in a way that made her blame herself for Brad being attacked.
“I will tell some of them to go, except Keith, Elaine, Camila, Brad, and the workers. They should remain here with us,” Ethan said.
Meadow frowned slightly, but he continued before she could argue.
“Cynthia and her boys are the only obvious enemies we have. Since they believe they have what they want, they pose no immediate threat, but the people who buried silver in my back and compelled you are still unknown. We need to be careful because one of those groups is the one that attacked Brad in his home,” Ethan pointed out.
Meadow knew he was on to something. She was not a strategist, so she nodded in acceptance. Ethan saw the worry in her eyes and wished he could take it away, but lies would not keep her safe. If anything, the truth would.
“Good news, by the way,” Ethan said, trying to make the situation lighter.
Meadow looked at him immediately.
“Leah is at the hospital. Dr Rosenberg has run all the necessary tests and will soon determine if she is a good candidate,” Ethan
said.
Meadow smiled, and her heart filled with joy. After all the horror of Agnes, after all the fear of Amber fading, this news felt like a
breath of clean air.
“Shouldn’t you be there?” she asked him, knowing how significant it was for the family.
“Levi is there, and Joseph will go there too to keep Leah company while they wait. We do not want to bring her here, and we do not want her to leave the hospital until the procedure is done,” Ethan said.
That made sense. If someone had been poisoning Amber, then Leah could not be exposed to the mansion. Not yet. Not before the surgery. Not while they did not know who had been touching Amber’s food, water, medicine, or routine.
“Knowing Mother was being poisoned is a serious matter. Which brings me back to what I want to tell you,” Ethan said.
Meadow watched him carefully.
“I do not want to release the staff yet. I want to know who did it and why, and the only way we can figure it out is by keeping the original staff and watching them in the house. Someone wants my mother to die, and I need to find out who it is,” Ethan said with

Meadow knew he had a point, so she did not argue with him. She held her peace.
