Chapter 240
“What is the meaning of all this?” Levi asked.
Cynthia laughed. It was light, cruel, and forced enough to make Joseph’s skin crawl.
“Your mouth shouldn’t be smart, Beta,” she said to Levi.
Levi wanted to hit her. Joseph saw it in the shift of his body, the tightening of his hand, the way his wolf rose and pressed through
his eyes. But Joseph stopped him with a small movement. They were at a great disadvantage. This was not the time for pride to
make them stupid. Joseph did not buy them time only to die a few days after. They had to be careful and calculate every move.
Every word. Every breath.
“What do you want?” Joseph asked her with a levelled voice.
“From your tone, I see you figured out who is in charge already,” she said.
Joseph fought every fibre of his being from killing her. He could imagine it too clearly. One lunge. One hand around her throat. One twist. Medley would not stand a chance against Rex in a clean fight. Cynthia knew it too, which was why she stood behind an army. But this was not a clean fight. Not anymore. It was politics, threats, hostages, silver, and numbers. He did not want to fight, not
when fighting now could cost the lives of everyone kneeling on that ground.
Joseph looked past her and saw Elaine and Keith on their knees. His stomach turned. Keith’s head was lowered, but his shoulders were stiff with fury. Elaine looked pale but steady, her eyes searching until they landed on Joseph. He wished he could tell her everything would be fine, but that would be a lie. Then he noticed Brian and Adam were missing.
His blood went cold.
“Where are my Beta and Gamma?” he asked.
Cynthia rolled her eyes like he had asked about a delayed meal.
“Had to teach those two pups a lesson. They tried to challenge my authority. Alphas or not, I am still in charge. Once their discipline is over, they would be brought back,” she said.
Before she finished speaking, four warriors dragged Adam and Brian into the compound. Joseph’s control almost snapped. Both men had silver on their wrists, and they had been beaten badly. Their faces were bruised, lips split, clothes torn and dirty. The warriors holding them did not treat them like ranked wolves. They treated them like sacks of meat to be dropped wherever Cynthia wanted.
The warriors let them fall face down to the ground, and their bodies landed with a thud, raising dust and causing those close to
cough.
Joseph wanted to run to them. The urge hit him so hard his muscles tightened with it. Adam was his Beta. Brian was his Gamma. They were his men. His brothers in all ways that mattered. Seeing them thrown down like that made something violent rise inside him. But he held himself. He could not link them because of the silver, so he remained calm. He had to stand there and swallow the

humiliation like fire.
“What do you want?” Levi finally asked calmly, understanding the situation they were in.
“I am here to do the bidding of my Alpha,” Cynthia answered calmly with a smile.
Joseph hated the way she said my Alpha. Like the words gave her value. Like belonging to a hidden man she had never even
properly known made her powerful. Like all she needed was someone worse than her standing behind her and suddenly she had the
right to stand over Whitewood.
“I am to take over this pack as Luna,” she said, smiling at them.
Joseph wondered how she planned to accomplish that. A Luna was not made by declaration alone. Not in a pack like Whitewood. Not in a house where Amber McCloud still breathed, even in a coma. Not while Meadow existed. Not while Ethan lived. Not while Joseph still had enough blood in him to reject the insult.
“No one would answer to you,” Joseph said.
Cynthia smiled wider.
“Oh, but they will, or it will mean instant death for anyone that crosses me,” she said with a glint.
