Chapter 236
“Why would you leave her by herself in the hospital?” Ethan asked him.
Levi did not think he owed any of them an explanation. Not in the way they were demanding it. He was Amber’s husband, not a child caught sneaking out. But he also knew his relationship with the brothers had never been clean. Their uncle’s allegations had
poisoned what little trust there might have been. Ethan and Joseph had always watched him as if he was a man standing too close
to something he wanted to steal.
“I had something important to take care of,” he said.
Ethan was pissed.
“What is more important than your wife?” Ethan asked him.
Levi wanted to answer, but he held his peace. He knew they would not believe anything he said, not in that mood. Sometimes silence was safer than truth spoken to people already prepared to reject it. But his silence only made the suspicion worse.
“They found poison in her system,” Ethan said.
Levi looked at Amber in shock.
“That is not possible,” he said in disbelief.
It came out too quickly to sound rehearsed. His face changed completely. Whatever exhaustion had been there was overtaken by horror. He stepped closer to the bed, eyes locked on Amber like the words might have reached her body and hurt her again.
“But it is. They found it in her blood,” Joseph said, still annoyed that Levi had left her alone in the hospital.
“Maybe the stab wound?” Levi suggested.
Ethan shook his head.
“Just like yours, her wound was clean. It was administered orally or injected into her system, and it is from that house. That is why we are mad, Levi. It is your duty to protect your wife,” Ethan said.
The words felt heavy leaving him because he was now married too. He understood protection differently than he might have before Meadow. He knew what it meant to watch another person breathe and feel responsible for every danger that could reach them. He protected Meadow to the best of his ability, even from his own anger, even from his own family’s secrets. So looking at Levi and knowing Amber had been poisoned inside their home, under his watch, made Ethan’s temper sharpen.
“What I went to do was…” Levi started.
A call came through for Joseph.

Chapter 236
Levi paused so Joseph could answer the call. Joseph glanced at the screen and answered quickly, already irritated by the
interruption. But within moments, his expression changed. The anger in his face turned into something colder, more urgent. He
listened, asked one or two short questions, then hung up and looked at Ethan.
“I have to go home,” Joseph said.
Ethan wondered why. The timing alone made him uneasy.
“Cynthia is at the mansion with warriors demanding to see Levi and me,” Joseph said.
Ethan could taste bile in his mouth. His hatred for the woman had become palpable. He could actually taste it, bitter and hot at the back of his throat. Cynthia. Of course she would come now. Of course she would walk into their home with warriors while Amber lay unconscious and Ethan had to pretend he was still harmless. The thought of her standing inside the mansion, breathing the same
air as Meadow’s room, made Echo stir darkly beneath his skin.
“What does she want? A rematch?” Levi asked.
Neither Ethan nor Joseph answered him. The question did not matter. Cynthia never came without wanting something, and
whatever she wanted would not be harmless.
“You two go ahead; Meadow and I will remain with her,” Ethan said, knowing one of them had to remain with his mother.
Joseph agreed to what Ethan said and left the room with Levi. For a moment after they were gone, the room felt too quiet again. Ethan wheeled his chair close to his mother and stared at her. The anger still burned inside him, but being near Amber forced grief to rise through it. He looked at her face, the faint improvement in her skin, the stillness of her hands, and he wondered how many times she had sat beside his bed when he was the one trapped between pain and silence. He wondered if she had ever cried where
no one could see.
Meadow sat on the couch to pray for the Luna.
