Chapter 224
Toward the evening, Ethan took out his phone to call Dr Rosenberg. He had not spoken to the man in a while, and he knew it would feel a bit awkward because of the accusation. Joseph had been rough with the doctor. Too rough. Ethan understood why but understanding did not erase what had happened. Dr Rosenberg had served their family for decades and had been accused of a betrayal Dr James had hidden behind his name. That kind of wound would not close immediately.
“I want to call Dr Rosenberg,” Ethan told Meadow while she massaged his legs to enable blood flow.
Meadow’s hands were warm on his skin. Gentle, but firm enough to work the muscles that had been unused for far too long. The touch should have been ordinary. Practical. Something a caregiver did because a body needed help. But nothing about Meadow’s hands on him felt ordinary anymore. Not after Echo had whispered mate. Not after the truth had settled between them like a blessing both tender and dangerous. Every brush of her fingers carried meaning now. Every touch seemed to reach him in places sensation had been dead or sleeping.
He could feel her touch faintly.
It was not enough to wiggle his toe yet. Not enough to announce. Not enough to celebrate. But it was there, or he thought it was there, and the smallness of it made it precious. He kept it to himself because he did not want to raise hope too high too soon. He had lived long enough inside disappointment to know that hope could cut when it was fed too quickly. But inside him, something
trembled with quiet joy.
Meadow nodded and went to get his phone, which he had left on the couch while speaking to his brother earlier. She moved with that quiet care she had around him now, as if every item she picked, every step she took every glance she gave him was part of protecting his recovery. He collected the phone and thanked her.
Meadow continued massaging his legs while he placed the call to the doctor. The phone rang a couple of times before Dr Rosenberg
answered.
“Alpha,” Dr Rosenberg said, sounding very happy.
The warmth in the doctor’s voice made Ethan’s chest tighten a little. The man was glad he had called. Honoured even. That alone made Ethan feel worse about the suspicion that had been placed on him. The doctor had spent decades serving the McClouds, and now a call from Ethan sounded like restoration to him.
“Good evening, Dr. How are you?” Ethan asked.
Dr Rosenberg answered politely, but Ethan did not let the conversation drift.
“I want to apologise for the distrust and the harassment,” Ethan quickly said.
The doctor chuckled softly on the phone, but the sound carried more exhaustion than amusement.
“I am not annoyed, Alpha. It was normal that Alpha Joseph would act that way. I checked the documents, too and found that I was listed there as the attending doctor,” Dr Rosenberg said.

Chapter 224
Ethan closed his eyes briefly. Dr James had covered his tracks well. Too well.
“Dr James ensured his name wasn’t on the document, so it was logical. I will somehow blame myself because I wasn’t vigilant. I was too trusting and signed off on the medical document without going through it and ensuring everything was in order. Had I paid attention, he wouldn’t have been able to cover his tracks as he did. I hope you catch the bastard,” Dr Rosenberg said, sounding
annoyed because the man felt betrayed by Dr James.
Ethan understood the anger. He would have felt it too. Dr James had not only betrayed Ethan; he had used Dr Rosenberg’s name as a shield. He had turned a trusted doctor into the perfect suspect and left him unknowingly carrying the weight of a crime that had shaped seven years of the McCloud family’s suffering.
