Chapter 222
She could not believe what he had just told her. But she knew she was not dreaming.
What Cynthia did not know was that the Alpha did not trust Sebastien anymore and needed to continue his mission without him. He suspected Sebastien might be working for other people and might double-cross him. Sebastien had become useful but unstable, ambitious but not fully controllable. Men like that could become problems if left too close to the centre of power.
Cynthia, on the other hand, was easy to read in a different way. She was power-hungry. She wanted status, protection, and a title so badly she would step over loyalty to get it. That made her dangerous, but it also made her easy prey. The Alpha Intended to exploit
that hunger.
He was not lying about mating with her, not entirely. He wanted children too, and she could give him that. She was ambitious enough to fight for a place, vain enough to enjoy being chosen, and hungry enough to obey if the reward glittered bright enough.
Cynthia was happy because, finally, she would head an operation and would not need to deal with Sebastien’s abuse in the same way. Finally, a door had opened. Finally, someone powerful had seen what she could become if given space to act.
“Please, I need protection from Sebastien if I am going to do this because he will hit me and punish me,” she said.
The voice laughed.
“The beating I did not know of, but I know you like the punishments he gives you. Nonetheless, he won’t touch you. Just do as instructed and leave the rest,” he said and hung up.
Cynthia looked at her phone screen, stunned for a moment by how quickly the call had ended. Then joy rose in her, bright and sharp enough to push through the soreness in her body and the humiliation still sitting under her skin. She was overjoyed by what had happened. This was it. This was her chance. Not a promise whispered by Sebastien after failure. Not a dream tied to a man who resented her. A real opportunity from the man above them all.
She was determined to do an excellent job and earn her place by the Alpha’s side as his Luna. She did not care what he looked like. She did not care about his age. Seeing that the man had acquired the two most powerful packs made him the most powerful man in their world, and that was enough for her. Power could make an old face desirable. Power could make a cold voice sound like safety. Power could turn fear into devotion if the reward was high enough.
She could not wait to see what Sebastien would do.
Her time to move on from him had finally come, and she liked it. She liked it so much that she almost laughed. After all the years of being punished for one betrayal, after all the nights of being treated like something he owned but could not love, after all the waiting for him to rise and take her with him, she had found a higher road, Sebastien could go to Ceenas and play Alpha there. Cynthia would go to Whitewood. She would prove herself where it mattered.
She went to lie on the bed, looking forward to what would ensue the next day. Her body was tired, her skin still tender, her face still aching, but her mind was awake with possibility. Whitewood. Levi. Warriors. The McClouds wounded but alive. The Alpha watching
to see how she performed.
