Chapter 214
Meadow wondered why he would ask her. Ethan saw the brief confusion on her face, and before she could respond, his protective
instincts rose.
“Why are you asking her?” Ethan jumped in.
Joseph looked at him, slightly caught off guard by the sharpness in his voice.
“Because I checked her file, and she was exceptional. I believe that was why mother wanted her to be Luna. No one beat her record. Her record bested even the Alphas in her class, but towards the last year, her performance dropped, and I suspect it is deliberate Because there was no way you could decline that fast, Meadow. I want a list of all the good fighters in your set; we will need all the help we can get if we are going to take back our freedom,” Joseph said.
His words were useful, but his tone came out more like an order than a request. Ethan’s eyes narrowed. Meadow was not a soldier to be commanded by Joseph. She was not theirs to use because they had discovered she had hidden strength. She was his wife, his mate, and whether Joseph meant harm or not, Ethan would not allow anyone to speak to her as if she belonged under their
command.
“Watch your tone, Joseph. She isn’t yours to order around,” Ethan warned him.
Joseph paused. It was clear he did not realise he had come off bossy until Ethan reprimanded him. The anxiety of everything had made him speak like the room was a war council and Meadow was another warrior waiting for instructions. But she was more than
that.
“I am sorry I came off as bossy, Meadow. I am just anxious,” Joseph explained.
Meadow nodded. She did not make a show of offence. That was not her way. But Ethan was glad Joseph had corrected himself.
“What about Ashley’s set?” Ethan asked him.
Joseph shook his head.
“I want people that do not know Cynthia,” Joseph said.
Ethan understood his point. Meadow’s set was likely to be more loyal than Ashley’s set. Cynthia’s reach at the academy might have poisoned more people than they knew. If Ashley had been influenced by her, others could have been too. They needed fighters who had not been directly tied to that woman.
“I will try,” Meadow linked Ethan and excused them.
Ethan watched her leave and understood that she needed a moment, Perhaps to think. Perhaps to breathe. Perhaps because the room had become too heavy with orders, war, suspicion, and grief. He let her go.
“Is she angry? Joseph asked his brother.

Chapter 214
Joseph looked worried that he might have pissed Meadow off because she did not respond to him directly and just walked away.
“No, she isn’t. She said she would try,” Ethan said, knowing he had given Meadow’s progress away.
It was deliberate. He wanted Joseph to know and keep it secret. There were things Joseph did not need to know, but this was not
one of them. Meadow’s restored ability mattered to their family and their safety. And Joseph, of all people, had to understand how
carefully it needed to be protected.
“How?” Joseph asked.
Ethan explained what happened with Camila and how Meadow suddenly started linking after the session. Joseph was in shock. I
was written all over his face. Meadow had been silent for so long that the idea of her linking again felt almost impossible.
“Can an Alpha command do this?” Joseph said.
Ethan nodded.
“The younger ones are more susceptible to it. It would be strong enough to hold if she was compelled at four years old, and the Alpha came back and compelled her wolf when she came. It was to render her deaf, blind and dumb, but her wolf overcame some of the compulsions. We are trying to see how we can break through the barriers and find out why the Alpha would do this diligently,”
Ethan said.
Joseph frowned. His mind went where Ethan’s had not yet gone, or perhaps where Ethan had been too angry to look properly.
“Why didn’t the Alpha kill her as a child? Why go through this stress? When he met her wolf, why didn’t he end her? Why do this? Is she some kind of science experiment for him? Is this Alpha trying to see how well compulsion works?” Joseph asked him.
Ethan had never thought of that possibility.
It made his blood run cold. He had looked at Meadow’s condition mostly through the lens of cruelty and control. Someone wanted her silenced. Someone wanted her unable to speak, hear, or see through her wolf. Someone had returned to reinforce the damage. But Joseph’s question opened another door. What if Meadow had been spared for a reason? What if the Alpha had wanted to observe the effect? What if her suffering had not only been punishment, but testing?
The thought filled Ethan with rage so quiet it almost frightened him.
“I do not know, but I am sure we will find out soon,” Ethan said.
Joseph nodded and sat on the couch, tired of standing. The weight of everything was finally catching up with him. Ethan could see it. His brother had been running on shock, duty, and anger. Now his body wanted payment.
Ethan wheeled his chair using the automation button instead of his hand because of his back. He hated how careful he had to be, but ripping his stitches open would help no one.
“So what did Dr Rosenberg say about mother?” Ethan asked.

Chapter 214
By then, Meadow had exited the closet and gone to the bathroom. Ethan waited until the water turned on before focusing fully on Joseph.
“He said there is a cure, that we will have to find a liver donor for her. That way, they will take a piece of the person’s liver, place it in mother and help it grow to size while the person’s remaining liver would grow back to normal size,” Joseph explained.
Ethan was glad. For one brief second, hope rose fast in him. A cure. Not just treatment. Not only waiting. A possible fix.
“So what has he been waiting for? Why didn’t he go ahead, or does our mother have a death wish?” Ethan asked, knowing she was
still hurting from their father’s death.
Joseph shook his head.
“There is no compatible donor,” he explained.
Ethan’s hope faltered.
“Elaborate,” Ethan said.
Joseph told him everything Dr Rosenberg had explained about their mother’s rare blood type and the limited and close to-
impossible donor options. B negative. O negative. Neither of them compatible. Levi not compatible. The need for a strong wolf,
preferably Alpha or Beta genes, with regenerative ability strong enough to survive the procedure and recover properly. Amber refusing to make a general request because she believed no one would help and did not want to be at anyone’s mercy.
