Two years. Joseph felt the words open beneath him like a hole. Two years sounded like time until it belonged to your mother. Then it became nothing. It became a countdown already too loud. It became birthdays she might not see, children she might not hold, fights she might not finish, mornings where she would slowly become less and less herself until the end found her.

He was sad about the time frame, but he kept himself together. He had to focus on finding her a match. That was the only way he could breathe around it. He decided to change the topic before the pain made him useless again.

“How are Ashley and Levi responding to treatment?” Joseph asked.

Dr Rosenberg nodded, seeming grateful for a question with a more hopeful answer.

“They are responding better. Your stepfather should be free to go home tomorrow; your fiancée would be held an extra day because she lost a lot of blood and her delta wolf is weak. The knife they stabbed her with was poisoned, which went straight to her liver. The organ needed help expelling it, but she is doing better,” Dr Rosenberg said.

Joseph was glad about the news, even if the word fiancée now sat strangely in his chest. Levi would be fine. Ashley would recover. That should have been enough for that part of his worry to settle. At least not everyone was slipping away. At least there were injuries that treatment could answer. At least some things were not beyond reach.

He wanted to walk away then. He needed air again. He needed to think. He needed to plan how to find a donor for his mother while also preparing for Ethan’s return and keeping Whitewood from collapsing under Sebastien’s temporary grip.

Then he realised Dr Rosenberg had not discussed Ashley’s pregnancy. Joseph stopped. The thought hit him in a strange, cold way. Ashley had claimed she was pregnant. That had been part of everything. Part of the pressure. Part of the future already being arranged around him whether he was ready for it or not. Dr Rosenberg had spoken about her blood loss, her weak delta wolf, the poison, her liver. But nothing about the baby.

He wondered if she had lost the baby and Dr Rosenberg did not want to give him the sad news in the middle of everything else. The thought was painful, but also confusing because the doctor did not look like a man hiding that kind of grief. He looked only tired.

“Dr, how is the baby?” Joseph asked.

Dr Rosenberg looked confused. That confusion was not small. It was not a doctor misunderstanding the wording. It was real Joseph’s stomach tightened. Realising the doctor did not understand, he decided to elaborate.

“How is Ashley’s pregnancy?” Joseph asked.

Dr Rosenberg did not know what to tell him. Joseph saw it before he spoke. He saw the hesitation, the carefulness, the quiet dread of a doctor about to deliver a truth that would become another problem.

“I do not know what is happening between you two, but she isn’t pregnant. There was no sign of pregnancy or a miscarriage when she arrived,” Dr Rosenberg said.

Joseph cursed. The word left him before he could stop it. It came from somewhere deep, somewhere furious and disgusted and fired of being played for a fool. He knew Ashley lied a lot. He had known that. She twisted things, exaggerated, cried when it suited her, manipulated rooms with soft looks and wounded words. He had known she was capable of deception.

He did not expect her to be a pathological liar.

The woman had played him.
