Chapter 203

For a moment, Joseph said nothing. Then he looked through the glass again. His mother remained still. The bigger fear returned.

“So what can we do to help her?” Joseph finally asked, referring to his mother.

Dr Rosenberg’s face changed. He became the doctor again, careful and sad, weighing hope against truth.

“If we get a liver donor, we can do a partial liver transplant and have it grow. The issue is neither of you is compatible. Your mother’s blood group is rare. She is B negative and thus can only receive from another B negative or O negative/donor,” Dr

Rosenberg explained.

Joseph listened hard, grabbing every detail. Donor. Partial transplant. Grow. Blood group. B negative. O negative. It was not nothing.

It was something. Difficult, yes, but something.

“Both you and your brother are O positive; her husband is AB negative. We tried to explore the option, but she decided to accept her fate once I told her neither of you was compatible,” Dr Rosenberg said.

Joseph’s throat tightened. Of course she did. Of course Amber had been told her sons could not save her and decided that was the end of it. Of course she had accepted quietly rather than turning the whole pack upside down. Not because she was weak, but because pride had always been both her armour and her curse.

“I told her to make a general request since they would just take a piece from a compatible person. It will regenerate in both bodies,

but she refused,” Dr Rosenberg said.

Joseph looked sharply at him. A piece. Not a whole organ. Something that could regenerate. Something a strong wolf could survive. Why had she refused that? Why had she not asked? Why had she not trusted the pack she had served as Luna?

“She believed no one would help and did not want to be at anyone’s mercy,” Dr Rosenberg said.

That answer cut Joseph more deeply than he expected. Amber had been proud, yes, but beneath that was something sadder. She believed no one would help. Or perhaps she believed asking would make her weak. Perhaps she had spent so long standing above

others that she did not know how to kneel, even for life.

“Besides, anyone who would do that must have a strong wolf with quick healing and regenerative abilities. Both you and Ethan are good candidates but incompatible with her,” Dr Rosenberg continued.

Joseph’s mind started moving faster now. Strong wolf. Quick healing. Regenerative abilities. Alpha or beta wolf genes. He was already thinking of names, bloodlines, ranks, every possible wolf in Whitewood and beyond who might qualify.

“Luna is likely to get help from Alpha or beta wolf genes,” Dr Rosenberg said.

Joseph held on to that.

“The chances of getting anyone are slim and next to impossible. Luna kept it quiet because even her husband wasn’t a match,” Dr

Rosenberg explained.

But Dr Rosenberg had just told Joseph more than he knew. He had told him what they needed. They needed to test all the Alphas and Betas they could find within the pack to see if they could find one compatible. Joseph was not going to get his hopes up too high. Hope had become dangerous. But he would try. He would try because doing nothing would kill him before grief did. If they failed and she died, then at least they would take comfort in knowing they tried.

“Without the surgery, how long does she have?” Joseph asked.

Dr Rosenberg hesitated only briefly, but Joseph noticed it.

“With my treatment and her wolf, based on the journey of her treatment so far and the rate of degeneration, would say roughly

two years,” Dr Rosenberg said.
