Chapter 190
Some people nearby gasped audibly. That sentence changed the air in the room. Everyone heard it. Everyone knew enough to understand the weight of it even if they did not know the details. Dr Rosenberg stared at Joseph in horror.
“What? When? How?” Dr Rosenberg asked.
The questions came out broken, and Joseph only grew more furious.
“You were supposed to help him, and you ruined him. You put silver in his back; we just took them out with surgery, so don’t
fucking deny it,” Joseph said.
Joseph’s voice turned cold there, far colder than a shout would have been. The murderousness in it made Rosenberg shake harder
“How? I can never do that,” Dr Rosenberg said.
“You and Mark Louis operated on my brother and placed silver in his back when he had an accident,” Joseph said.
At that, tears started streaming down the doctor’s face. He was a Kappa wolf, not one of the powerful ones. Joseph’s dominance,
fury, and accusation were crushing him.
“I… I… I…” Dr Rosenberg stammered.
“Speak,” Joseph commanded.
The command broke across him like a lash.
“I didn’t attend to your brother; I was on leave. I only came to sign his medical report,” Dr Rosenberg said.
Joseph stared at him. For the first time since grabbing him, doubt entered. Not because he trusted him suddenly. But because the
answer was too specific, too immediate, and too desperate to ignore. Rosenberg kept talking, rushing now that words had finally
found him.
“You can investigate it, Alpha. I wasn’t the one that operated on Alpha Ethan. I would never do that to him. I love him like a son.
They showed me the image of the silver, and they showed me the scanned image after they had taken it out, so I signed it,” Dr
Rosenberg said.
Joseph nodded once, but it was an angry nod. A dangerous one. The doctor still sounded like he was lying. Or maybe Joseph wanted
him to be lying because a lie was easier to hit.
“I am his doctor, so his file will bear my name, but I wasn’t the attending physician. There was no way I could be. I know absolutely
nothing about bones. I am a general practitioner,” Dr Rosenberg added.
That made Joseph pause properly now. Then he asked the question that mattered next.

Chapter 190
“And Mark Louis?” Joseph asked.
Rosenberg wiped at his tears badly.
“He was part of the operating team. He died a year ago in a car accident,” Dr Rosenberg replied.
Joseph laughed. Not because it was funny. Because that was exactly the kind of answer fate would hand them. A dead end. A dead
man. A name leading nowhere they could reach with their hands.
“Nice try, doctor,” Joseph said.
But Rosenberg was crying too hard now to keep any dignity.
“Please investigate. You can verify all these things I have said. I did not operate on Ethan. I swear. It wasn’t me. Mark Louis and Dr
James Pitsberge were in attendance, not me. I wasn’t there. They just called me to sign the documents and what they showed me
indicated he was all right,” Dr Rosenberg said.
Joseph went completely still. Shock moved through him so hard it made the room seem to narrow for a moment. Dr James. The
name landed wrong. Too wrong.
“Are you sure about what you are telling me?” Joseph asked.
The frightened doctor nodded again and again. Joseph turned immediately.
“I need a phone!” Joseph ordered.
A nurse quickly handed him hers. Joseph took it and stepped away enough for the conversation not to be heard by everyone in the
room. Then he called Keith. Keith answered after two rings.
“Keith,” Joseph said.
“Yes, Alpha,” Keith replied.
“How is Ethan?” Joseph asked.
“Awake but alright,” Keith answered.
Joseph closed his eyes briefly, relief and alarm colliding in him. Then he asked the real question.
“What about the doctor that operated on him?” Joseph asked.
Keith’s answer came too casually at first, which only made it worse.
“The man was jittery, scared and left. I dropped him off at the main road where his friend came to pick him up this morning,” Keith
replied.

Chapter 190
Joseph cursed under his breath. Keith heard it immediately.
“Is everything alright?” Keith asked.
Joseph stepped farther away before answering. He did not want anybody overhearing this. Not yet. Then he told Keith what had
happened. Quickly. Clearly. Enough for the other man to understand that the ground had shifted again and badly. Keith was
stunned. Joseph could hear it even through the silence before Keith spoke.
“Please give Ethan time to recover. I just want you to know what is happening,” Joseph said.
Keith understood at once that Joseph was not asking him to storm into Ethan’s room and dump the new horror into his lap while he
was barely awake from surgery.
“Are you sure Dr Rosenberg is telling the truth?” Keith asked.
Joseph’s mouth tightened.
“I must do what we should have done instead of the secrecy. Once my mother comes through, I will ask her. She will know who
attended to Ethan,” Joseph replied.
And that was the part that hurt him immediately afterward. Regret. He regretted not telling Amber more when he had the chance. Regretted the secrecy. Regretted trying to keep too many things controlled. He could see now that their silence had cost them. If they had questioned more openly, dug earlier, spoken sooner, perhaps James would never have left so easily.
Keith spoke again.
“It takes a while to verify signatures on a pack document. We have to be grateful that the system isn’t yet automated,” Keith said.
Joseph knew exactly what he meant. Sebastien would discover the lie eventually. That Cain’s name was false. That Ethan, not Cain, legally held the pack. And when that happened, Sebastien would come back viciously.
“We just have to hope we are ready when it happens,” Joseph said.
Then Joseph ended the call. He returned to where his mother was receiving treatment and found Dr Rosenberg still nearby.
“Stay away,” Joseph warned.
The warning came out like a blade. Rosenberg obeyed instantly, but not before trying one more time to do his actual job.
“She is not well; they need to detox her system, so she can heal,” Dr Rosenberg said.
Joseph frowned at him. What was he talking about? Then Rosenberg said the thing that made the ground seem to drop out from
under Joseph all over again.
“Your mother’s liver is failing. She has been managing the situation for almost a year now,” Dr Rosenberg said.

Chapter 190
Joseph stared at him. For one long, terrible second he could not even react properly. It was too much. Too many truths. Too many
betrayals. Too many pieces of his family cracking at once.
Ethan sabotaged for years. The pack taken. Levi stabbed. Ashley bleeding. Amber now dying slowly from something he had only just
learned.
He needed to think. He needed to gather his thoughts. He needed to breathe.
So Joseph walked away from the place just to breathe.
