Underwater: The Silent Luna novel Chapter 188

Chapter 188

Keith accepted that and returned to the living room. Camila was standing there alone when he came back. Keith looked around for the doctor.

“Where is Dr James?” Keith asked.

“He went to get his things upstairs. A friend of his is waiting for him by the main road. I was hoping you would allow your Kappa to drop him off there,” Camila said.

Keith nodded, but curiosity remained sitting uneasily in him.

“Don’t you think it is odd he wants to leave?” Keith asked.

Camila shook her head.

“He is afraid, Beta. I was the one that dragged him into this mess. He might seem put together, but he has been nervous since. It is

even a miracle that he could carry out the surgery. He honestly does not feel safe. Besides, he isn’t a personal doctor. He is an

orthopaedic surgeon, and the fact that the people behind Alpha’s issues would know that he was the one that helped makes it more

important that he disappears. I feel bad for dragging him into the mess, but I am glad. At least Alpha has a chance at a normal life

and can connect with his wolf again,” Camila explained.

Keith listened and could not argue with the logic of it. Fear did strange things to people, Men who looked calm could still be

shaking inside. And after what happened to Brad, after the questions, after the beating, after the way those men would rather die

than speak, Keith knew enough to understand why an ordinary doctor would want to vanish. Dr James was right to be nervous. A

man did not survive something like this by pretending he was braver than he was.

Ten minutes later Dr James came downstairs carrying his bag. He had changed into casual clothes, which somehow made the whole

thing look even more final. Like a man already stepping out of one life and into another before dawn could catch him.

“Have you verified?” Dr James asked.

He asked it as soon as he saw Keith. Keith nodded.

“Very well, a friend is waiting for me on the highway. Right at the start of the road that leads here,” Dr James said.

“Come on, I will take you,” Keith replied.

Dr James frowned.

“Shouldn’t you be here just in case of an issue?” Dr James asked.

Keith shook his head. He knew Meadow was more capable than Dr James realised, but he kept that to himself. He also knew Ethan would not suddenly collapse in the ten or fifteen minutes it took to do this. The bigger risk, in his mind, was letting the doctor disappear poorly and then having nothing to work with if he went missing.

Chapter 188

Dr James was not happy that Keith would be the one taking him, but he was not stupid enough to argue with the Beta. So he accepted and followed him out.

They rode in silence. Dr James was visibly nervous the whole way. He kept glancing out, shifting slightly, breathing wrong. It was the kind of nervousness that called attention to itself, and Keith found it irritating after a while.

“You need to learn to be calm. Doctor, being jittery won’t keep you safe,” Keith said.

Dr James gave him a strained smile and tried to relax, though Keith could tell he was forcing it.

Soon they reached the main road. A man was standing beside a sedan waiting. Dr James got out quickly, almost too quickly, and thanked Keith before hurrying toward the car. Keith watched closely. He made sure he got a good look at the man waiting. Then, without making a show of it, he took out his phone and saved the sedan’s plate number. If Dr James disappeared, if anything happened to him, they would need somewhere to start. Keith believed in having something to trace, even when everybody else wanted to trust that things had ended neatly.

When he got back to the cabin, he went to shower. Only then did the weight of what had happened begin pressing on him differently. Ethan was alright. That thought kept circling. Ethan would be alright. And if Ethan truly recovered, then everything would change. His retirement, the distance, the reduced role the team had been living in, all of it would end. Once Joseph returned Ethan’s pack to him, the whole team would have to come back. Every one of them. Whitewood would fill again with the people who belonged at Ethan’s side.
