Chapter 122

“Remind me never to cross you.”
Meadow’s cheeks coloured immediately.

Even now, after what happened, she still had that softness in her. That almost shy reaction to praise or attention. It made what
Nightshade had done feel even more jarring. Keith had seen the body of the brown wolf. He had seen the damage. No one could miss the brutality of it. The dead wolf in the clearing had looked like it stood no chance once Nightshade truly engaged. That image would stay
with him for a while.
“Who would have guessed that you were a beta?” Keith added.
Meadow lowered her eyes” ”

for a second, uncertain what to do with that too. She had spent so much of her life being underestimated that
even positive shock felt difficult to wear. Ethan glanced at her, then back at Keith.
“I need you to investigate, Keith. I want to know where that wolf came from and why. I do not want to draw conclusions yet.”
Keith’s expression shifted at once from surprised friend to capable man.
“On it, Alpha.”
Ethan nodded and led Meadow back to their bedroom without another word. He did not want the conversation stretched out there in front
of everyone. He did not want Meadow standing in the living room thinking he was taking her away to scold her. He also did not want to
say certain things where anyone else could hear them. Some moments belonged only to the two of them.
Meadow followed him nervously.
She tried not to let it show too much, but it was there in the stiffness of her shoulders, in the way her steps were quieter than usual, in
the way she kept glancing at him like she was waiting for the change in his face she feared might come at any second. She did not know
how he would react once they were alone. She knew she had saved him, yes, but she also knew Nightshade had shown a side of herself she
had always tried hard to keep buried. She had spent years taming her wolf. Holding her back. Making her smaller. Slower. Less noticeable.
Less dangerous. She never let the full extent of Nightshade’s strength show before. Not at school. Not in training. Not anywhere. Letting
it out had always felt risky, like exposing a part of herself the world would not know how to handle.
Now Ethan had seen it,
Really seen it.
And Meadow did not know if that would change something between them,
The moment the bedroom door shut behind them, Meadow went and sat at the foot of the bed. She perched there rather than settled, as
if she was not sure she belonged in comfort until she knew where his mind was. Ethan noticed it immediately. He noticed her mood, the
tension in her, the uncertainty all over her face. He wheeled his chair toward her slowly, not wanting to startle her further.

Chapter 122
“I am not mad, Meadow.”
He said it first because he could see she needed that before anything else.
Then he reached out and touched her chin gently, lifting her face so she had to look at him.
“I am impressed and very proud of you. If you weren’t with me, that wolf might have done a number on me before Keith arrived. You
saved my life. Nightshade saved my life. I can never be mad about that.”

The words hit her so hard she almost sagged with
She let out a breath she did not realise she had been holding, and then she smiled. Small at first. Then fuller. Softer. The fear in her chest
loosened enough for warmth to move in its place.
