Chapter 121
རཱ 96
Ethan, Meadow and Keith entered the cabin in silence, and the silence felt heavier than it should have. It was not the comfortable kind
that settled after a long day. It was the kind that came after shock. After blood. After seeing something that could not be easily explained. The cabin, which had felt warm and safe before they stepped into the woods, now seemed too still for a moment, as if it was also waiting to understand what had just happened. Elaine was already in the living room when they came in. She must have heard them coming
because she stood almost immediately, her face tight with worry as her eyes moved over all three of them one after the other, trying to
judge with one glance what shape the e trouble had taken.
Seeing that no one was bleeding and that the three of them were standing there helped her loosen a little, but not enough to fully calm
her. She went to Keith first. Straight to him. It was instinct. Her hands found d him qu
quickly, and he wrapped his arms around her in return.
Ethan noticed the way Keith held her for one extra second, like he was reassuring her before he even said a word. It made something
soften in Ethan’s chest. They were good together. Simple in a real way. Not performative. Not dramatic. Just solid.
“Thank goddess, you are all alright,” she said.
Keith rubbed her back gently.
Ethan still had Meadow’s hands in his own. He had not let go since they started walking back to the cabin, and he did not even realise he
was still holding on until he looked down and saw how tightly his fingers were wrapped around hers. He could not help it. He was still
speechless. Still trying to process what he had seen Nightshade do. He knew Meadow had saved him. He knew it clearly. But knowing it
and truly absorbing it were not the same thing. His mind kept flashing back to the clearing, to the way that brown wolf came at him, to
the way Nightshade moved, to the speed of it, the vicious precision of it, the complete lack of hesitation. It had all happened too fast and
yet it kept replaying in detail.
“Luna took care of business before I got there,” Keith confessed.
Elaine pulled back from him and looked at Meadow then, really looked at her. There was surprise there, but also relief and something
close to admiration. Meadow stood a little closer to Ethan without meaning to. She was not sure what to do with that attention.
“Thank goddess you are trained. We have never experienced such a thing before. The woods are completely safe.”
No one answered her.
The statement only made the room feel stranger.
Ethan’s jaw tightened a little. The woods were supposed to be safe. That was part of why he brought Meadow there. He wanted to give her that freedom. That joy. He wanted her to feel her wolf under the sky, in the open, away from the watchful eyes of the pack and all the
small cruelties of the world. He had not taken her there carelessly. Keith knew the land. The paths were clear. This place was meant to be
a break from everything ugly. So why had a wolf come for him there? Why then? Why while he was away on holiday with his wife?
The thought sat badly in him.
“You mean there hasn’t been an attack out here before?” Ethan asked, finally speaking.

Keith shook his head.
“Not that I know of, Alpha.”
Then Keith smiled at Meadow, though there was still disbelief in his face.
