As they were chatting, Eleanor suddenly asked, "Why isn't Jordan back yet?"
Logically, Jordan should have been at the press conference today. He was Mira's mentor and a major shareholder.
But given his background, he preferred to keep a low profile and avoid the public eye. Even so, he should have been home by now to hear how it went.
"I'll give him a call."
Mira quickly pulled out her phone and dialed his number, sensing something was off.
Jordan was highly capable of defending himself, but what if something unexpected had happened?
It took a full minute for him to answer. "I'm heading back now," he grunted.
Then he abruptly hung up.
"What's wrong?"
Eleanor asked, noticing Mira's furrowed brow.
"I swore I heard a woman's voice in the background. Do you think Chloe Abbot is causing trouble again?"
"Don't worry. Jordan is a grown man. He can handle himself."
Sure enough, shortly after Eleanor spoke, Jordan stormed into the house, looking furious. "Jordan, did Chloe bother you again?"
Mira asked.
"How do you know her name is Chloe?" he demanded.
"I think... I heard it from you," Mira bluffed.
"From me? Who actually told you?" Jordan raised his voice.
Mira froze, too intimidated to answer.
"You heard it from that punk Jax, didn't you? I have never once mentioned that woman's name." Jordan glared at her.
Right then, the Chef and Martha brought dinner to the table.
"So why were you delayed for so long?"
Eleanor pressed.
"The traffic cops showed up, and she told them I was her family. I had to waste time explaining the truth to the officers.
After that, Mira called, and I headed straight back.
You can't give people like her an inch. If I had offered a hand or even a word of sympathy, she would have clung to me like a leech, and I'd never shake her."
"It's entirely possible they're legitimately out of money," Mira suggested gently.
"Then they got what they deserved. Over a decade ago, she stole millions of dollars from me—money meant for my men's payroll—and transferred it all to her own accounts.
Millions of dollars back then was an astronomical fortune. An ordinary person couldn't earn that in a lifetime. If she hadn't lived so extravagantly, it would have easily lasted forever.
So if she blew it all or got scammed out of it and has nothing left, that's entirely her own fault."
