Too Late to Hold Me Back novel Chapter 1129

"And once we were there, you all kept trying to convince me to stay for a few extra days. We live right here in Aethelgard. Home is barely an hour's drive away. Logically, I should have come back to sleep. No matter how nice it is outside, nothing beats the comfort of your own bed. But you insisted I spend the nights there. Mira, does that sound like something you would normally do?"

Mira sighed in defeat. "Grandma, you're just too sharp. I thought my plan was flawless, but you saw right through it."

Eleanor continued, "If I'm not mistaken, those people were bound to come causing a scene those few days. You told Rachel to take me away just so I wouldn't have to stress over it. Besides, it's been so long, and that family hasn't come knocking to cause trouble. That's entirely out of character for them."

Mira rested her head against Eleanor's shoulder. "So you knew everything all along! Grandma, why didn't you ask me?"

"I wanted you to have peace of mind. You went through all that effort for my sake! I didn't want to add to your burdens, so I just played along. You're already exhausted enough as it is. As for them, from the moment I cut ties with the Quinn family, whatever happens to them doesn't stir a single ripple in my heart anymore. They can do whatever they want. I'm old. I don't have the energy to waste on them. Since I can't fix them, I'm letting them go. Later, I saw on the news that Seraphina married Lawrence. If my guess is right, that insufferable bunch must have given you two hell."

After a pause, the old lady added, "I also know you worry about my health and want to shield me from the stress. But if I'm kept in the dark, my anxiety only grows. It's alright, just tell me. What storm haven't I weathered in this life? A little drama like this isn't going to break me."

Mira caught his drift and intentionally left out the part where Lawrence was hauled out of the Quinn Group headquarters. They certainly weren't going to mention Seraphina's pregnancy, either.

Even though Eleanor claimed she didn't care about that family anymore, Sebastian was still her biological son. Seraphina was the granddaughter she had practically raised, and the Quinn Group was her life's work. Sometimes, emotional bonds couldn't just be severed with a few words.

Sure enough, upon hearing this, Eleanor gritted her teeth. "I knew that illegitimate cur was nothing but a vile piece of trash! Only a brainless harpy like Gwen Quinn would marry her daughter off to a monster like that. And Sebastian is too weak-willed to stand his ground against her manipulations. I'm telling you, with Gwen dragging Sebastian down, the Quinn family is doomed! And from what I see in Seraphina, she's even worse than Sebastian! She inherited her father's weak spine, easily swayed by others, and her mother's vicious jealousy. If Sera had married a decent, capable man, she might have lived an alright life. But she chained herself to Lawrence and became obsessed with him. There's no way this ends well for her. As for Miles, he doesn't have a bad heart, but he lacks edge. He doesn't have the teeth or the talent to pull off a miracle. If he had normal parents, he'd be fine maintaining the status quo. But with parents like his and a restless sister, he's destined to fail. And don't even get me started on your Uncle Marcus's side of the family. They're utterly heartless. They never bothered with you anyway, so just pretend they don't exist."
