"Lawrence deserves to die, but I feel worst for Seraphina. They just got married, and I heard she's pregnant."
"Is Seraphina really innocent? I say she brought it on herself. Of all the men in Aethelgard, she had to marry that piece of trash?"
"Right? They both run in Aethelgard's elite circles. There's no way she didn't know about his reputation."
"Birds of a feather flock together. Seraphina and Lawrence are probably made for each other."
...
Jocelyn Lance suffered the most in the days following Lawrence's arrest. He was her pride and joy, her darling, and her insurance for the rest of her life. Everything she did was for him. Lawrence was more important to her than her own life. If she had to rank her family, Lawrence was first, followed by herself, and then Luna Lance.
As for Richard, despite how much Jocelyn usually pandered to him, he was merely a tool for her to gain leverage. He had been her ticket to a life of luxury in her younger years. But she knew her future wealth and status entirely depended on her precious son, Lawrence.
When Jocelyn heard her son had been arrested again, she fainted on the spot. Upon waking, she cursed Owen a thousand times in her head. Then she dragged Richard along as they desperately begged everyone they knew, trying to find a way to reduce Lawrence's sentence.
Richard felt much the same. He frantically threw money around, trying to pull strings. He already knew his eldest son would never support him; he was counting on his youngest to secure his retirement.
The third person in a state of panic was Seraphina. She was pregnant and already feeling physically miserable. Now her husband had been arrested, and dragged right out of her own family's company at that. The household was in total chaos, with her in-laws constantly pressuring her to beg her family for help.
But her parents had exhausted all their connections to no avail.
Sebastian told her, "This time it's the airline suing him. The charges are far too severe. No one dares to bail him out."
None of them realized the old lady was this perceptive!
Mira quickly linked her arm through Eleanor's. "Grandma, it's just their company calling. It has nothing to do with us. Here, have some fruit." Mira grabbed a piece of dragon fruit with a fork and offered it to her.
But Eleanor didn't open her mouth. She sighed. "When the phone rang earlier, I saw the way Owen's eyes darted toward me. Did you really think I wouldn't notice?"
The two of them were stunned, entirely at a loss for words.
"I knew something was off when you brought me to Mercer Jewels a while back. Even Rachel kept pushing me to go."
