Lily kept staring at me, waiting for me to finish the line but I had completely forgotten what I was going to

say.

I looked from her to Sandra who was busy talking to her other friends excitedly about the plans for today.

Meanwhile, Lily cast one longing look in Aaron’s direction and looked back at me.

“You were saying something?” She prodded.

“Uh” I shook my head. “It was nothing important”

She gave me a smile and joined the group to chat.

Meanwhile, Jane only poked me in the ribs hard.

“Why are you staring at her like you saw a ghost?”

I kept looking at the group and how Sandra and Lily were talking like besties. I wondered if Sandra knew Lily and Aaron’s little secret but highly suspected she didn’t.

If she did, she wouldn’t be hugging her like a long lost friend.

Was I the only person in this room who knew?

I sat down carefully and was still turning this over when Sandra clapped her hands together.

“Okay. Car’s arrived for us. Let’s go.”

Everyone grabbed their things and I was reaching for my bag when I caught a fleeting glance of a figure wearing a dark suit with a phone to his ear and walking past the glass walls on one of the upper floors.

I knew the shape of him without needing to see his face.

“I’ll meet you at the car,” I told Jane, already advancing towards the staircase. “I just need to urgently use the bathroom.”

Jane’s eyes went to where I was looking and back to my face and her expression said several things without saying any of them.

“Sure, I’ll suffer through some more torture for you” she said, and followed the others.

I went the other way, up the main staircase, climbing two or even three stairs at a time to catch him before he would disappear again.

Why the hell were there so many stairs?

I continued running up the second flight, then the third, all the way to the top floor where the Alpha’s office suite occupied the east wing. By the time I reached the landing I was genuinely panting, pressing one hand to the glass wall and trying to not look like a person who had walked through a hurricane to reach here.

And somehow the sight before me made me feel that all the efforts had not been vain

Connor was inside the huge office, standing near the window with his back facing me. He was still glued to his phone and talking to someone.

I couldn’t hear the words but as I inhaled deeply to catch my breath, I noticed little things I hadn’t paid attention to before.

The mere thought of him kissing her made something ugly twist in my stomach.

Connor, oblivious to my plight, still was juggling the phone by placing it between his shoulder and the crook of his neck.

Mercifully, he straightened, and took his hand back. The girl mumbled thank you, though her smile disappeared when he was no longer touching her.

Connor picked up a rolled sheaf of papers from the desk and lightly bopped her on the head with it once, like you’d do to a younger sibling, and walked back around to his side. The girl pressed her lips together and smiled at her screen like he had just proposed to her.

I was standing on the other side of the glass feeling the specific unreasonableness of jealousy over someone being tapped with a document.

I knew it was absurd and I turned to leave before the jealousy grew into something more but then he finally noticed me.

“Sienna.”

His voice was muffled through the glass, and I looked back to find him at the wall looking directly at me. Wait had he been aware of me standing by the pillar in the window reflection the whole time?

Oh Goddess.

I shook my head and started down the stairs and barely made it four steps when a hand closed around my wrist.
