That bravery instantly melted when he leveled his gaze at me, pinning me with a hard glare when I said those words.

Ever since his return, he hadn’t looked at me like this. And Goddess help me, my brain still noticed the way a muscle in his jaw twitched and the way his Adam’s Apple bobbed when he swallowed.

Wait, why was he gulping like he was nervous because of me? Had the medicines suddenly granted me some superpower to annoy the big bad wolf?

His eyes narrowed and he took a step forward, standing directly in front of me. He was so damn tall I had to crane my neck up to just look him in the eye.

I imagined how I must look to him, a tiny little human that weighed maybe half of him and was challenging him.

And I would be lying that some part of me, that really broken and depraved part hated the fact that the pillows had been absolutely intact.

That Connor Ashford, the heartthrob with a panty dropping smile had let me just sleep in his bed without touching me.

Had he touched me before only because my scent was too damn annoying for him to ignore? Had he ever really kissed me because he truly wanted to do so?

One confusing thought after another slammed into me as I willed myself to not step back and ascertain if I could be near him without wanting to climb him like a tree.

The fact that he was half naked and I could just reach forward to count all the muscles on his toned chest was making it extremely difficult to focus on having a conversation.

‘Focus, Sienna’

Connor looked down at me. “What did you say?”

He had obviously heard it, he was only giving me a chance to take it back.

I refused to back down. “I said make me”

One second he was holding the heavy bag. The next his firm hands were on me instead, steering me backward until my shoulders met the glass wall behind me.

The contrast was filthy. I was trapped between the cold glass against my back, and the raw heat of his bare chest only inches from mine.

My breath left me in a soft, startled sound. Every nerve ending in my body lit up like a live wire.

I could smell clean sweat and whatever soap he used and the faint metallic edge of blood from his knuckles. My pulse thudded so hard I was certain he could hear it.

Connor leaned in just enough that I had to tip my head back. His voice came out low and rough.

“Now isn’t the time to test my patience, Speckles.”

I stared up at him wide-eyed, listening to the uneven rhythm of his breathing and the quiet trouble sitting behind his eyes.

Slowly, I lifted one hand and pushed the damp strand of hair that had fallen across his forehead. He inhaled sharply at the light brush of my fingers.

“I’m just trying to help you,” I clarified. “You need to relax.”

A humourless smirk tugged at his mouth. “With you hovering around me?”

I blinked hard and tried very, very hard to ignore the tingles that bloomed under my skin where he was touching me and traveling downwards to pool low in my stomach.

“I thought the meds would be enough, but I’ll apply the ointment too, if it annoys you so much” I muttered under my breath.

Connor shuddered like the words themselves had brushed against his skin. He stepped back abruptly, turning away from me.

I didn’t leave. I reached out and caught his wrist instead like my body hated the loss of his touch.

“Connor, please.” The word came out softer than I intended. “Stop this and eat something.”

For a second he looked ready to refuse.

“Pleaseee!”

Then his eyes traveled down from my face to where I held his arm and his shoulders slumped, the fight draining out of him just enough that I took it as surrender.

As if on cue, Maria appeared in the doorway carrying two steaming cups of coffee. She took one look at the scene with Connor shirtless and bleeding, and me still slightly pink-cheeked but wisely said nothing.

“He needs a protein smoothie and a salad,” I told her before she could offer the coffee. “Something he can’t argue with.”

Connor opened his mouth but I shot him a glare after seeing him give in earlier.

“Don’t even start. You’re being stubborn and it’s too early for it.”

He stared at me for a long moment, then closed his mouth and dragged a hand down his face, smearing sweat. Maria’s lips twitched with poorly hidden amusement.

“I’ll bring it right away,” she nodded, and disappeared.

I sat on the nearest bench, picked one of the sandwiches I had brought, and started eating while I lectured

him.

“You need to stay calm today.” I muttered between bites. “Elder Johanson is already looking for any excuse to make it difficult for you. You know, I saw him and Sandra gossip about something. I am pretty sure she was trying to turn the votes in Aaron aka her favor. That bitch!”

At that, Connor’s mouth twitched again.

“Now you swear too in addition to bullying?”

I shrugged defensively.

“I only stated the truth” I chewed on the sandwich loudly.

“Besides, if you walk in there looking like you want to murder the punching bag, he’s going to use it. I can quickly tell you the questions Aaron got…”

Connor stood up so fast the bench scraped. “I said I don’t want to hear them.”

“You’re being ridiculous!”

“Stop annoying me.”

The sharp edge in his voice made me pause, but only for a second.

Before I could fire back, Maria returned with a tray: a thick protein smoothie and a bowl of salad that looked too green. I stood, ready to hand it to him, but he was already turning away.

“Where are you going?”

“I have to go to the office.”

“Stop right there, Connor!”

He didn’t so I grabbed his arm and pulled. He probably wasn’t expecting it and the momentum made him turn back toward me so quickly we nearly collided.

For one second the entire front of my body brushed his. Heat flared under my skin. I ignored it with heroic effort and pushed him down onto the bench.

“Sit. You aren’t going anywhere until you finish it all.”

Connor looked up at me, expression caught somewhere between irritation and reluctant amusement.

“Or what?”

“I’ll shove it down your throat”

He almost gave me a smile. “What a bully you are!”

I grinned. “Someone has to be.”

He picked up the smoothie. The moment he raised it I caught sight of his knuckles again that were split, raw and still seeping blood.

“Wash that and let me bandage it.”

“It’s nothing.”

I gave him the same glare that had worked earlier. “It’s not nothing. You need to stay calm and focused, especially now that the meds are working. I took care of that problem for you, right? So dont go creating new ones!”

Connor stopped mid-sip and looked at me over the rim of the glass.

“What?”
