Chapter 154

We thanked Dr. Aldana, took the bottles, and left, and I didn’t think anything more of that last piece of information until we were back in the car.
But Jane pulled out of the parking lot with an expression on her face that I could only describe as evil delight barely contained.
“I don’t like the look on your face” I frowned.
“I didn’t even say anything yet,” she said.
“Jane!”
“I’m just thinking about it and will tell you when I have decided it’s a good idea,” she replied and refused to elaborate for the rest of the drive.
That only made me fear for the worse.
Once we were back in my room, Jane sat cross-legged on my bed reading the instruction pamphlet that had come with the tonic like it was the most compelling document she’d encountered all year, occasionally making a small thoughtful noise that I didn’t like the sound of at all.
“Okay so,” she said, finally, tapping the paper. “The doctor said extreme proximity and emotional spikes can overpower the medication.”
“Yes,” I said, unpacking my bag warily.
“And strong emotion so…arousal.”
“Jane, where is this going?”
Her eyes lit up with an expression that told me she had come up with genuinely terrible ideas that she was completely convinced were nothing short of brilliant.
“There’s only one way to actually know if the meds are working,” she began.
“…What?”
“The dosage. The doctor said it’s going to be trial and error until we find the right amount of dosage for you”
“So?”
“I think we should speed up the process so that you don’t find yourself in a publicly humiliating situation”
I didn’t like the way she was trying to tone it down but was very, very excited.
I folded my hands on my chest and stood in front of her.

I saved at her.
“That is the worst idea you have ever had,” I shook my head, “and you once suggested we break into the school peel at midnight using a ladder made of chairs.”
That plan worked alright,” she said, sounding slightly wounded.
You broke your wrist.” I reminded her.
“Only slightly,” she said, waving this off.
This plan is much safer. Nobody’s climbing anything. Well…” She reconsidered and tried hard to not smile.
Metaphorically someone might be climbing something, but no actual chairs are involved.”
Im not doing this.” I said with a tone of finality.
You’re absolutely doing this,” she said, already typing something into her phone.
It’s for science. Also it’s going to be extremely entertaining and I would like a front-row seat, metaphorically, from wherever I am when it happens, please text me updates.”
Jane, forget about it.”
“Think about it,” she pleaded, looking up at me with her eyes gleaming like she knew she’d already won.
need to test the dosage. The doctor said so herself. And what’s a more controlled way to test extreme oximity and emotional spikes than doing what I suggested?”
There is nothing controlled about that plan.” I tried to not let the blood rush to my face.

Nope, this was an utterly ridiculous idea.
“His mansion is filled with people, with elders and his parents…..and Aaron.”
Jane snorted. “Aaron should be the least of your worries”
“How do I win him back if he sees me getting all worked up over just his half brother’s smiles?”
Jane’s eyebrows shot up.
“Connor’s smiles are enough to get you all eager and aroused?” She gasped.
“No, I didn’t say that. That’s the least he can do when we are surrounded by other people.”
Jane smiled cheekily.
“Oh you truly undermine his reputation and abilities.”
I opened my mouth to argue but she chimed in. “Besides, the medicines should work just fine against his smile. So we need to find how much Connor Blackwood it takes to break you,” she finished, grinning at me from ear to ear.
I put my face in my hands and groaned, and despite the groaning, a part of my brain was screaming in a small and very unhelpful voice that Jane’s terrible idea was, unfortunately, not that terrible.
I stayed like that for a while with my face buried in my hands willing some other brilliant idea to strike me but when it didn’t, I finally looked up.
Jane was watching me like a restless puppy with her entire body fighting to sit still.
“So?” She asked after letting me breathe for another minute. “What do you think?”
I gave her a miserable look.
