I couldn’t help but steal glances at Connor every now and then who had proceeded to now talk to the other elders who were enjoying their meal.

My gaze flicked to Elder Johanson who looked utterly miserable holding his steamed bowl of soup and when I looked back, I saw Connor give me a wink.

He winked!

And fuck he looked so delicious when he paired that with a slow smile that I had to curl my fingers into fists and stop myself from physically jumping on him.

What was wrong with me?

What was this forbidden aspect of keeping away from Connor that was making me feral for him?

I shook my head and tried to concentrate on the dinner table. My appetite had long gone, flown away from me when Elder Johanson humiliated me and now I only wanted to sit down so I grabbed a chair and did just that.

I watched Sandra from the corner of my eye. Her smile had gone brittle about twenty minutes ago. She laughed a little too brightly at something Aaron said, but her gaze kept flicking toward Connor every time he moved.

Once again he had stolen the spotlight she had so carefully arranged for Aaron and herself. The elders who should have spent the evening praising Aaron’s steady reliability had instead spent the latter half of dinner observing Connor with renewed interest.

She nudged Aaron to say something but he shook his head and whispered something in her ear.

As a result, Sandra’s fingers tightened around the stem of her wine glass until I thought it might snap.

As much I loved that reaction, I needed to get out.

The emotional exhaustion of the evening had finally caught up with me.

Being publicly corrected by Johanson, watching Sandra play the perfect savior, feeling Alpha Asher’s cold eyes on me, and then watching Connor dismantle the entire power dynamic without ever raising his voice had been too many events for a single night. My dress suddenly felt too tight. All I wanted was my room, a blanket pulled over my head, and permission to stop existing for a few hours.

I murmured a quiet excuse to no one in particular and slipped away from the table.

The corridor outside the dining hall felt cool after the thick warmth of so many bodies and opinions.

My heels clicked softly against the marble and I forced my legs to move. I managed to take ten steps or maybe it was twelve before familiar footsteps fell into rhythm beside me.

“Going somewhere?” Connor’s voice reached me with that familiar dry amusement.

I looked up. He had loosened the top button of his formal shirt and rolled the sleeves to his elbows.

There was still a faint smear of dried blood near one knuckle that he hadn’t quite managed to scrub away.

His dark hair was slightly mussed, like he’d run a hand through it once too often during the evening. There was also a dangerous little twinkle lit in his eyes.

I managed a tired little smile and shook my head. “I was actually planning on going to sleep.”

He nodded once, as if he’d expected that answer, but he didn’t stop walking. Instead he kept pace beside me, hands in his pockets, looking far too pleased with himself.

“I owe you something first if you don’t mind that is”

My heart did an inconvenient little skip.

Owe me something? The last time those words had left his mouth we had ended up in places that made my knees weak.

My mind helpfully supplied a very vivid image of his bed, his sheets, his hands, and I nearly tripped over my own feet.

“What?” I asked, voice a little higher than usual.

He glanced at me sideways, that same teasing glint still in his eyes. “You’ll see.”

I narrowed my eyes. “That’s not an answer. Where exactly are you taking me?”

“Somewhere quieter.”

“That’s still not an answer.” I muttered under my breath, “This is starting to feel like kidnapping.”

Connor’s mouth curved. “If I were kidnapping you, Speckles, you’d already be over my shoulder and you’d be enjoying it a lot more.”

Heat flooded my face so fast I was certain I glowed. He gave me an amused, thoroughly satisfied smile.

“You’re blushing.”

“I’m feeling cold. The air here is chilly”

“Mm.” He didn’t sound convinced.

We turned down a quieter corridor. Our hands brushed as we walked. It was just the lightest graze of knuckles against knuckles but that was enough to make a sudden rush of goosebumps prickle up my arm.

I sucked in a sharp breath which Connor noticed immediately.

He slowed, voice dropping into something lower and far more dangerous. “Are you okay?”

“Fine.”

He leaned in just enough that only I could hear him.

“I don’t think you are okay. Though it was a good thing Maria made you wear that dress or things would have been a bit more difficult.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“What do you mean?”

He tilted his head as if he was wondering if I was faking it, decided I wasn’t and then added.

“Oh right, you haven’t awakened your wolf yet right?”

“What does my wolf have to do with the dress?” I asked, growing even more confused.

I was a late bloomer per my mom and my family had never really fussed about it so we never really had a long, serious discussion on my wolf.

“The absence of one” Connor clarified.

I scratched my temple.

“I am not sure if I am the right person for you to have this conversation with…because generally its the women of the pack that educate young girls on this.”

I narrowed my eyes. “And you are no doubt an expert on everything ocncering girls?”

Connor nodded. “You said it not me”

I frowned. “Stop being cheeky and tell me”

He sighed.

“At first, I was unsure of why you would suddenly come up with your rule of no physical contact with me. But then it all clicked.”

“English please” I groaned.

Connor looked around and then motioned for me to walk beside him.

“You see most of the werewolf kids awaken their wolves at a young age, between sixteen to eighteen years of age though some are said to have awakened it as late as twenty.”

That bit I did know.

“Yes and I am nineteen so I have plenty of time”
